A very intriguing guitarist with a sound of his own, Jonathan Kreisberg is quite versatile. He can sound like a cool-toned jazz guitarist, but can also shift to a more rock-ish fusion sound and is quite lyrical on the ballad "Elena." His originals sometimes use unusual time signatures and/or rhythms and, though not containing catchy melodies, they draw one in. Along with the newer songs, Kreisberg plays an unusual 7/4 version of "Stella by Starlight" and a swinging "The Best Thing for You." His trio is augmented by pianist Gary Versace and altoist Will Vinson on a few of the numbers which adds to the fire, particularly on "Antlered Ego." This well-rounded and consistently colorful CD grows in interest. ~ Scott Yanow

I call this the 8-track special. We recorded this batch of songs during my bar band days in Northern Wisconsin and we did the recording in a friend's 8-track studio. Ah yes, those were the days. Straight-ahead bar blues with some country and folk material I did back then as well. All said, there's some strong songs on this recording and some good performances as well. On Wisconsin . . . Chico Hamilton has led a number of surprisingly innovative groups during his long career, but his recordings from the mid- to late 1950s represent some of his best work. With Strings Attached was recorded for Warner Bros in the fall of 1959, featuring the drummer's quintet with bassist Wyatt Ruther (who had previously worked with Dave Brubeck, guitarist Dennis Budimir, cellist Nathan Gershman, and newcomer Eric Dolphy, who is heard on flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax. Former cellist Fred Katz contributed arrangements and conducted the string section which augments the group on five tracks. Hamilton's band is very forward-looking for the time, while Dolphy is already shaping up as an innovative soloist (he would begin to be recognized in the near future, only to die prematurely in 1964 from undiagnosed diabetes and insulin shock).
