The chamber jazz outfit Oregon had been making music for almost 40 years by the time 2007's 1000 KILOMETERS was released. Eschewing jazz conventions as usual, Oregon blends styles with a sense of elegance and adventure on this set, veering from jazz fusion to folk to world music to atmospheric chamber work. Guitarist Ralph Tower wrote most of the compositions on 1000 KILOMETERS, and reedist Paul McCandless has plenty of room to show his improvisatory chops, but the emphasis, as always with Oregon, is on organic group interplay and the remarkable textures and colors that can be achieved with an open-minded approach to boundary-breaking music.

| | Ralph Towner Time Line CD (2006)
1000 Kilometers
$13.19 It's hard to believe that it's been more than five years since Ralph Towner issued his last solo guitar album, or any album under his own name, for that matter. Anthem was issued in 2000. Time Line is a return to the stark, spacious and lyrical explorations of that set. That's not to say this is any kind of direct replica. Towner's a restless artist, he pushes his boundaries on the classical and 12-string guitars. The set contains 14 new compositions and two fine covers that provide the real reason for Towner's not-so-secret inspiration here: George Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now," and Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine." The muse, of course, is Bill Evans. Evans has been forever associated with the former tune since his 1961 trio performance of it at the Village Vanguard; the latter is a tune he played live fairly often in the '60s and even the '70s. Time Line is full of lively, even, bright textures and moods. Check out the languid beauty of "Turning of the Leaves" or the nearly singing "Always by Your Side," or the nearly Celtic folk aspects of "Anniversary Song," where he plays airs and rounds. The moodier and more melancholy side of his playing can be heard in the brief "Oleander Etude," or the tender, near flamenco single string playing in the 50-second section of "Five Glimpses/3." "Freeze Frame," the gorgeous 12-string exercise here, uses the instrument's droning quality to establish a harmonic resonance ...
| | Trio Beyond Saudades CDs (2006)
1000 Kilometers
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. The results on this double-disc album, Saudades, are explosive, dynamic, and utterly compelling. The repertoire comes from Lifetime's songbook. Spectrum: The Anthology and the intense stunner of a set closer "Emergency" come from the band's debut album of the same name, and two more pieces, Young's "Allah Be Praised" and John Coltrane's "Big Nick" come from Turn It Over, the second Lifetime disc. DeJohnette goes a step further here in featuring Davis' "Seven Steps to Heaven" in the program. The album the tune draws its title from is the first date Williams appeared on as a member of the trumpeter's group. Also included here is "I Fall in Love ...

$12.19 Too expansive and jammy to be called simply alt-country, too avant-garde for the hacky-sack set, and absolutely nothing like Wilco, Oakley Hall's 2006 album, GYPSUM STRINGS, is a lovely musical anomaly. | | Huascar Barradas My Favorite Things CD (2006)
1000 Kilometers
$18.19 Huáscar Barradas has deserved eulogies such as the one given by the prestigious German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemaine Zeitung: “Mr. Barradas transported us to the expressive spectrum of the flute, beyond of what our European ears are used to. He shined with absolute rhythmic precision and virtuosity…”To widespread the spectrum of possibilities of the flute has been, precisely, the main purpose of this particular and versatile musician who can be seen on the stages of the world performing virtually any musical stream from Bach to the Beatles, as a soloist, as a symphonic musician, playing chamber music, contemporary music, folk music, flamenco, jazz or African music. To him and his flute, everything seems to be “just music".His talent has taken him to important stages in Venezuela, USA, Japan, Germany, France, England, Canada, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Colombia, Peru, Korea, Phillipinines, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Martinique, Aruba, St. Lucia and El Salvador. He has represented Venezuela at important festivals such as Radio France et Montpellier Festival, European Flute Festival of Frankfurt, Expo-Hannover 2000, National Flute Association Convention 2000, the International Contemporary Music Festival of Bogotá, International Festival of Folklore in Turkey, 1st Latin American Flute Convention in Caracas, XII International Musica Convention of Medellin, among others. He has produced 6 CDs (4 of them, platinum in the Venezuelan market) with his music band “Huáscar Barradas y Maracaibo”. In addition to it, he has recorded as soloist with the National Phylharmonic Orchestra the piece specially written for him by the Venezuelan composer Domingo Sánchez Bor, “Viaje de la Jirafa” (Journey of the Jiraffe). In 2003 he produced and launched “Pacificando”, Whales and Humans singing to life, an innovative CD; an impressive musical experiment combining sounds from the Pacific whales, with human voices and electro acoustic effects. The success of this initiative triggered his international recognition as composer.Born in Maracaibo, Huáscar is the product of an excellent academic education which includes studies at the "Conservatorio de Música José Luis Paz" of Maracaibo in Venezuela, the Brooklyn Conservatory of New York (graduated Cum Laude), the Julliard School of Music, the Superior School of Music of Frankfurt (Sehr gut). He has studied under the supervision of prestigious Maestros as Eulogio Gómez, Bernard Golberg, Nirijam Nastasy, Robert Aitken, Aurele Nicolet, Peter Lukas Graf, Michael Scheneider, among others. He studied orchestral conducting with Vincent La Selva and Karoly Kope, and Jazz with Shelton Berg and Ron Carter. He is a founder member of the Estudiantina Juvenil and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Zulia State. He won the Texas Junior College Competition in 1983.
