On this 2007 album, romance-obsessed trumpeter Chris Botti looks to Italy for inspiration. A set of swooning smooth-jazz tunes, ITALIA features a number of guest vocalists, including Andrea Bocelli (on the gentle title track) and Paula Cole (a spare, elegant version of "The Very Thought of You"), along with the late Dean Martin, whose unmistakable croon turns up on a lightly swinging rendition of "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face." Botti shines the brightest, however, on instrumental pieces, most notably his warm, laid-back takes on two classic numbers by revered Italian composer Ennio Morricone, "Deborah's Theme" (from ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA) and "Gabriela's Oboe" (from THE MISSION).

I have all of Chris Botti's cd's and just added Italia. He is definetly 10 stars in a 5 star rating. If you have never listened to a trumpet player before give a listen to Chris Botti and you will be hooked. To describ this cd in one word "soothing".Chis is just the best.

All of Chris Botti's cds are great, but this one.......just incredible!!!!I have no words to describe what happens to me when i hear his music....i mean he has something....i almost cried when i heard his "Caruso" performance...

Highly recommend this CD if you want soft romantic Botti thoughtout your life, home, car, cell, M3p, wherever, great album. Will not disappoint.

I was introduced to Chris Botti about a year ago by a friend. I have since collected all of his music. This is very typical Chris. What a wonderful talent!! Great selection of music as well. You will not be disappointed.

At the precise moment when a corporate reshuffling and a reduced roster led to death knells in the press for Columbia Records' jazz division, Chris Botti was signing on after three albums at rival Verve, the jazz arm of Universal. Along with Bela Fleck, poached from Warner Bros., Botti seemed to represent the new lean-and-mean Columbia Jazz, an eclectic, contemporary artist with considerable crossover potential to go with his jazz legitimacy. While the dominant sound on Botti's Columbia debut is naturally his haunting, minor-key trumpet playing, highly reminiscent of the more introspective aspect of Miles Davis, his original music, co-written with one-name producer Kipper, is strongly reminiscent of the pop-jazz approach of his most recent employer, Sting, whose tour hiatus created the opportunity for the recording of the album. Sting even contributes a song, the samba-paced "All Would Envy," complete with lyrics describing a wealthy May-December marriage, sung by Shawn Colvin. But elsewhere his spare, stylish, multi-cultural music provides a guiding principle. Botti is true to the basic tenets of smooth jazz, which hold that a steady beat within a propulsive rhythm track must be maintained, over which the soloist makes his presence felt. Although the most popular contemporary jazz tends to fall into the "lite" category, trumpeter Chris Botti avoids painting himself into this corner by sticking with an approach more reminiscent of Chet Baker. For his 2004 album, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, Botti takes it a step further by employing the London Session Orchestra to provide him with lush accompaniment on a program predominantly made up of standards.
