White Rainbow--aka prolific synthesist Adam Forkner, who also records as VVRSSNN--creates soothing electronica that is low on dynamics but rich with tone and warmth. This 2007 release contains nine long-ish tracks that mesmerize like some of Brian Eno's better minimalist releases. The liner notes tout the music as having healing properties, and though it's unclear whether Forkner is being facetious or serious, there is a beatific, trance-inducing quality to the music that rests the mind and gives comfort.Uncut (p.132) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's no denying the luminous beauty and meditative power of his delicately phrased, fuzzed, looped and pitch-shifted ambient soundscapes."

The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound comes from the legacy of '80s college rock -- at times suggesting a fusion of the Smiths' witty, bouncy melancholy and the on-the-sleeve passion of Throwing Muses -- and also has ties to some of the other bands remaking new wave and post-punk in their own images, the Organ and Grab That Gun have a freshness that isn't often heard in any kind of rock music. It's no surprise that Naglfar's albums have never seemed entirely focused -- hampered as they were by ongoing side-projects and therefore given to long periods of inactivity. This is certainly the case with their second effort, 1998's Diabolical, which competently delivers the quintet's brand of thrashy black metal, but offers very little in the way of innovation or outright thrills.
