(7 Customer Reviews)
Lyrically, Mitchell melds poetic imagery with sociopolitical themes more seamlessly than she's done in some time, and even revisits one of her earliest songs in this mode, with a perky recasting of her chestnut "Big Yellow Taxi." Listening to the level of artistic urgency apparent on SHINE, it's difficult to imagine Mitchell could have ever really believed she had nothing left to say.
The world almost didn't get another Joni Mitchell album after she announced her retirement following 2002's TRAVELOGUE. Whatever her reasons for changing her mind five years down the line, the sheer inspiration behind SHINE is obvious. Her first album of new material in nine years, SHINE finds Mitchell adopting a more intimate approach (especially in contrast to the massive orchestrations of TRAVELOGUE), handling many of the instrumental duties herself. In fact, it's her unconventional approach to both acoustic and electronic instruments that gives the album much of its singular charm; unusually organic synthesizer stabs and skittering electronic percussion rub shoulders with oddball guitar tunings and spidery piano lines.

The year of the Iguana, Joni returns! Sorry my English…I’m from Brasil.
Well, “Shine”…finally a new album with new songs from the Queen Joni Mitchell. I love Joni. 5 stars to the album but my favorite album is “Turbulent Indigo” (1994) yet, and the my second favorite is “Taming The Tiger” (1998) yet too (the last studio albums with original songs). I’m a musician and I play guitar so I prefer the songs with acoustic guitar and ‘’Turbulent Indigo” is magic, wonderful, sublime, with a lot of acoustic masterpieces songs. “Shine” can follows the Turbulent’s trails and Tiger too but…is more modest, less pretentious, more ‘light’… but is wonderful, sure.
There are 4 ballads with piano: ‘If I Had A Heart’, ‘Strong And Wrong’, ‘Bad Dreams’, and ‘One Week Last Summer’ (a instrumental).1 version from a classic: Big Yellow Taxi (good folk version). 1 good ballad/rock song: ‘Hana’. The soft, intense, reflexive and beautiful song ‘Shine’.
There are yet a great and beautiful ballad with acoustic guitar: ‘If’.
Well….but my favorites are ’This Place’ and ‘Night Of The Iguana’. In my opinion these 2 songs makes the album “Shine”. Don’t think twice if you like songs from ‘Turbulent Indigo’, the music ‘This Place’ remembers a lot of that songs. Is beautiful, wonderful and ultra folk!
And the other masterpiece ‘Night Of The Iguana’ is a powerful song, a truth masterpiece! This song is a mix of original rhythms and chords like just Joni can makes. Is amazing and is the best of the best!
Well, Joni is God to me…I love you Joni, and thank you so much for “Shine”and for the songs ‘Night Of The Iguana’ and ‘This Place’. The best to you, Joni…always!

Stark, moody and dramatic. Perfect! This was my first introduction to Joni Mitchell. Mind you, I had no idea what I was getting into, but I was pleased at the strong songwriting and the amazing atmospheres that she had created specifically for this album. It is hard to take a look at the music and break it down, because if you take one part out, it all falls apart. Albeit the overly political statements and general bashing at what us fellow humans have done to the world initially turned me off, I still liked what I heard. Then I found out that she was a really strong songwriter from the sixties, so I was like, "well, no wonder! This is right up her alley!" This whole album feels like a master at the genre returning to her craft. And she weaves a tighter spell than Shelob in her lair outside Cirith Ungol. Give this a listen, and draw your own conclusions. It is the only way you could ever come up with a good analysis of this music. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, Alaska) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This CD is Absolutely Stunning Joni has done it again....The music, the lyrics, and her amazing voice are all perfectly blended to make this album one of her best. The entire CD is mesmerizing and I cannot stop listening to it. Her words are so powerful and appropriate for the current political climate and that voice....brings goosebumps to my skin. The fact that she sings about things that really matter adds to the emotion. Submitted by Sandra (San Gabriel, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Shine
$13.79 On his first studio album since 1995's CONVERSATION PIECE, R&B legend Stevie Wonder revisits familiar ground from earlier eras in his career while keeping with contemporary pop sounds. Although certain tracks conjure up the vibe of early Wonder outings (the funky "Please Don't Hurt My Baby" and the sunny, upbeat "Positivity," which features additional vocals by his daughter Aisha Morris), other tunes (the smooth "From the Bottom of My Heart" and the romantic "Passionate Raindrops") recall his more polished '80s period.
A TIME 2 LOVE is bookended by two of its strongest songs--"If Your Love Cannot Be Moved," an urgent duet with gospel singer ...

| | Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD (2007)
Shine
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning in their own right and reinterpreted beautifully by Hancock, plus a stellar assortment of musicians and guest vocalists.
Mitchell's pop and folk tendencies have been assimilated into the arrangements; the album plays like a vocal jazz outing. Hancock is joined by fellow Miles Davis alums Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland, among others, and the guest vocalists include Norah Jones, Tina Turner, ...
| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
Shine
$14.69 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers.
Consisting mostly of sagely chosen cover tunes, the album finds Plant and Krauss bringing their warm-but-eerie harmonies to everything from Townes Van Zandt's nihilistic folk poetry ("Nothin'") to the crumbled beauty of latter-day Tom Waits ("Trampled Rose"). ...
