Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Helmed by Ichaso (PINERO) with documentary-like realism, and carried by Anthony, who bears a striking (albeit thinner) resemblance to Lavoe, EL CANTANTE thoughtfully depicts the rise and fall of a remarkably talented vocalist unable to shake debilitating addiction. Husband and wife in real life, Anthony and Lopez reveal a convincing chemistry, and the movie bolsters the Puchi role to give J. Lo more screen time, an aesthetic decision than allows her gentle-yet-determined presence to play off of Anthony's troubled Lavoe. While off-stage drama receives its share of attention in EL CANTANTE, the film also wisely shines the spotlight on Lavoe's charismatic performances, which are captured with grace and gusto by Anthony, a beloved singer in his own right. At the core of The Roseline is singer/songwriter Colin Halliburton - hushed voiced, melodic and tuneful, possessed of an easy going view on life`s fleeting joys. With a wispy roots sound that incorporates elements of traditional and alt. country the band works from Halliburton`s acoustic guitar and voice outward. Light drums, bass and piano provide accompaniment that recalls the most roots-bare moments of acts like The Pernice Brothers, Whiskeytown and The Jayhawks. Guests add touches of electric and pedal-steel guitar to good effect, and there are some well place backing vocals courtesy of Julia Peterson. But from start to finish, Halliburton rides a mid-tempo wind of intelligent songwriting that has great warmth, occasionally rising from the mellow roll to something that rocks.Colin first picked up a guitar in the Spring of 2004 and in the year following, prolifically penned over 70 songs. Seeking a bigger outlet for his expanding song list, Halliburton called upon several musician friends to help him narrow down the list and record a proper album. ‘A Wall Behind It’ is the end result of this effort. The album is rooted in both traditional and non-traditional country and folk music, occasionally flirting with rock n’ roll. YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE marks Copeland's return to the indie scene after a brief hiatus during which the successful Florida outfit considered aligning itself with Columbia Records and released the stopgap, odds-and-sods collection DRESSED UP AND IN LINE before settling down with sympathetic indie imprint Tooth & Nail. The confident and assured YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE exhibits little evidence of this turmoil, however, and sounds like a logical progression from the rapidly maturing emo pop of 2006's EAT, SLEEP, REPEAT. As always, Aaron Marsh's whispery, Elliott Smith-like vocals establish a rather subdued tone that allows relative innovations like the unusual chord progression of "The Grey Man" and the horn dappled hooks of "The Day I Lost My Voice (The Suitcase Song)" to lend subtle sonic coloring to this pleasing, unobtrusive record.
