Veteran altoist Herb Geller, who doubles on soprano, performs 13 songs that originated in Hollywood films on this CD. The underrated "Call Me Irresponsible" is taken as a duet with bassist Martin Wind while Geller duets with pianist Don Friedman on David Raskin's always-magnificent "The Bad and the Beautiful." The tunes feature the saxophonist with either a three- or four-piece rhythm section. Geller, who seems to have found the Fountain of Youth in Europe, sounds quite ageless, playing with power, creativity, and joy. In addition to a few standards, such pieces as "Troubled Waters," "Pawnbroker Theme," and a medley of "Taxi Driver" and "Marnie" are effectively revived. Respect is paid to each of the melodies before Geller and Friedman play melodic solos that derive logically from the themes. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Herb Geller (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Martien Oster (guitar); Martin Wind (double bass, bass guitar); Hans Braber (drums).
Additional personnel: Don Friedman (piano).
JazzTimes (p.112) - "The most swinging track in the set comes from THE WIZARD OF OZ, 'Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead'....Pianist Don Friedman contributes an excellent solo and Gellar's alto sounds more hard-edged than usual..." Herb Geller At The Movies Songs At The Movies Review

| | Phil Woods American Songbook CD (2006)
At The Movies songs
$14.35 Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they co-wrote the tune. Lynch's muted trumpet is a natural choice, but Charlap's extrapolation ...
