For many, Gloria Estefan will forever be associated with the shiny, commercial strain of Latin pop she helped pioneer with her band Miami Sound Machine in the 1980s. This is a shame though, because in the years since Estefan has pushed beyond her early style to encompass straight dance music, adult contemporary balladry, and more traditional Spanish-language Latin fare.
90 MILLAS (2007) is a compilation gathering Estefan's roots-based efforts, with a special focus on the music of Cuba, Estefan's native country. On these 14 original Spanish-language tracks, the singer explores traditional Cuban forms and rhythms, while adding her own distinct crossover flair. While the material and performances are uniformly strong, it's the staggering guest list that makes 90 MILLAS shine. First flight Latin jazz artists Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, and Cachao, among others, spice the stew, and elsewhere Latin rock and pop stars familiar to American audiences put in appearances ("No Llores," for example, the album's first single, features contributions from Carlos Santana, Jose Feliciano, and Sheila E.). The result is an eminently listenable tribute to Estefan's heritage and the rich musical tradition of Cuba.

Agreeing with Michael but Gloria does sound good! I am surprised too. I am a fan of Gloria and I am sure this CD will pick up on sales by years end. Surprising sales but the recording industry seems to be a shambles now. I agree with Michael where's Vikki's duet with Gloria? Glad to see Vikki's Ultimate Collection is selling so well. We need more Gloria's and Vikki's to brighten our ears and ger back to real music. 4 stars for Gloria for this release. Submitted by Gregory C. (Baton Rouge, LA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
BUENO! This album is great from the first to the last song! Mrs. Estefan has once more established herself as one of the most talented and celebrated musical artists today. She is holding it down without racy and disgusting videos. I adore and love the songs Caridad, No Llores, Esperando and the two Afro Cubano songs Morenita and 90 Millas, which is accompanied by La India!
Being a Blatino with roots from Cuba, she makes me long to visit my paternal homeland I have never seen. Submitted by flawlessfarmer (Cleveland, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Once again where's Vikki Carr with the duets? I see other performers who have all worked with Vikki on TV through the years, even remember Vikki presenting Gloria and her husband with a special Billboard award a few years ago. It puzzles my mind not to find Vikki especially with the new slew of duets CDS being released. Perhaps its because Vikki would stand out? I do like Gloria's latest, however. Invoking, Evoking and Marking I love the CD, my first Gloria Estafan purchase; however, she sounds like she's invoking Marc Anthony's style - sorry! She does sound big and bad though, bien Machua. I bought the CD for the India guest vocal, who sounds back on top of her game, and I really dig the rest of the album. Morenita is killing it! Great cd!
