The late pianist Jimmy Blythe was something of a Chicago legend in the 1920s. Like a shooting star, Blythe burned brightly and was quickly gone. He accompanied blues performers Blind Blake and Ma Rainey, and led sessions of New Orleans-style traditional jazz with clarinet legend Johnny Dodds. Blythe recorded in both jazz and blues styles before his death in 1931, and was one of the first pianists to play in the rolling, heavily rhythmic boogie-woogie style. MESSIN' AROUND collects some of his earliest recordings, and as there aren't many Blythe discs in print, it's a supremely valuable set for devotees of early jazz.

In 1915 Jimmy Blythe moved from his native Kentucky to Chicago. Blythe was prolific and accompanied many jazz & blues artists such as Ma Rainey and Blind Blake. He also produced hundreds of piano rolls for use in nickelodeons for a major label company. B
