| | Rodrigo Y Gabriela 11:11 CDs (2009) Digipak
Zifferoticon Koenig Globales U CD music
$12.39 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican ...
| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Zifferoticon Koenig Globales U music CDs
$10.79 Bob Marley/Bob Marley & the Wailers: Bob Marley; Aston Barrett (bass instrument); Peter McIntosh, Bunny Livingston (background vocals); Carlton "Carlie" Barrett.
It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. "Concrete Jungle," one of the towering standout tracks, addresses the trap of inner cities, while "Slave Driver" and "400 Years" take on racial/historical issues. Yet Marley's penchant for gorgeous love songs is evident here too on his all-time classic "Stir It Up." Even after everything that followed, and the cult of idolatry that formed around Marley, this remains soulful, message-driven music that goes straight to the blood. Utterly essential.
For a majority of the world, Catch a Fire was not only the introduction to Bob Marley & ...

Zifferoticon Koenig Globales U music CDs
$26.95 This 13-track anthology brings together new recordings from five distinctly different Texas blues players. U.P. Wilson from the Dallas/Fort Worth area is the biggest name here and his work on "That's Your Woman, but She Comes to See Me," athe instrumental "Chankety Chunk" and his work with Bobby Gilmore on "I Just Can't Help It" makes for some of the finest moments on this disc, full of wild skitterings up and down the guitar neck, with strong vocals in support. Henry Qualls is traditional to the point of being 'backwoods, ' and his "Rosie Mae" and "Party Tonight" feature plenty of his ragged vocals and a sense of timing normally associated with folk-blues performers. Bobby Gilmore shines on his solo offerings, "Strange Bed" and "I Can't Be This Way No More," while Andrew "Junior Boy" Jones' slashing guitar work on "Stinky Dink" and "Fast Woman" makes them tracks that belong in the highlights file. Another Dallas/Forth Worth native, J.B. Wynne also heats things up on "All Alone Blues," "Dynamite" and "Are You Sticking with Me Baby," a fine close to this sampling of Texas guitar heroes on the road less frequently traveled. ~ Cub Koda

| | Argan South Moroccan Motor Berber CD (1999)
Zifferoticon Koenig Globales U songs
$16.59 An improvement over their previous album Berberism. Although this too mixes and matches some traditional Moroccan music (particularly as heard in Hassan Arouhal's banjo and melismatic lead vocals) with Western/rock sampling and programming, the sound is gutsier, due mostly to the dirty electric rock guitars of Fido K. and Larbi Kanssab. The 13 songs run together as an uninterrupted suite of sorts, and there are some swooping electronic and dub-like effects that zig and zag as if they are instruments in their own right. It is not easy to use programming, sampling, and electronics with spontaneity in a rock/world fusion setting -- at least, such spontaneity ...
