Four years after his debut solo release, the Philly representative and Ice City crew member Freeway sounds as hungry as ever on his follow-up, FREE AT LAST. Keeping it gully with that trademark vigorous flow bubbling up with gangsta posturing and gun-toting hood narratives, Free matches his fierce vocals to a gang of street-level beats courtesy of Kanye West, Cool & Dre, Bink!, Dame Grease, Don Cannon, and J.R. Rotem. Featuring a guestlist of rap industry heavyweights such as 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Marsha Ambrosius, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, and Scarface, FREE AT LAST is another tight Roc-A-Fella effort that stands with the label's best.

$12.99 On album number nine, Snoop branches out a bit, assuming executive producer credits and working as one-third of the production team QDT (along with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik). While the production hovers around 1970s R&B, soul, and smoothed-out funk (with conspicuous samples from Marvin Gaye, the Isleys, Brooklyn Dreams, and Prince Phillip Mitchell), there are also a few curious excursions into '80s synth-pop ("Cool") and even country music ("My Medicine"). At the same time, Snoop's lyrics are all over the place. Over the course of the album's 21 tracks, he goes from mega-boasting on his fame and wealth ("Gangsta Like Me," "Staxx in my Jeans") to celebrity name-dropping ("Deez Hollywood Nights") to seductive talk-box crooning ("Sexual Eruption") and groupie-love anthems ("Life of da Party," "Those Gurlz") to bittersweet reminiscing on his rise from ...

$12.99 Nasir Jones's controversially untitled LP follows the impressive trifecta of GOD'S SON, STREET'S DISCIPLE, and HIP-HOP IS DEAD. This latest record leans on gritty, often metallic production and a mission of personal catharsis, often in congress with a current sociopolitical pointedness. Nas's most aggressive eviscerations are saved for the hard-rocking rampage of "Sly Fox," which stands up for Ludacris and other MCs assaulted by conservative pundits, as if playing the role of the protective older brother. But for all the album's candid nihilism, perhaps the most moving moment is still one of hope, as articulated on "Black President." Poignantly sampling a 2Pac lyric about it seeming "heaven sent," ...

$9.35 A sound that transcends the genres. Truly an aural feast. From the opening salvo of the aptly named Celestial Serenade through the album highlights of Crystal Eyes and Sonic Elation to the glorious ending of Night-Out this is an album not to be used as background music but to be truly enjoyed and appreciated.RAW features 12 tracks total. Eleven are instrumental and on "Crystal Eyes", when lyrics are used, it only adds a greater depth to the album.RAW is an indie album in the truest sense of the word. In that it was recorded and published by the artist and yet this does not hamper the quality of the production one bit. The sound quality as well as the CD packaging are of a standard that one would expect from a major record ...
| | Rebolt Made In Spite EP CD (2007)
Free At Last
$10.19 CLASSIC ROCK BROUGHT TO LIFE«Made In Spite EP» is Rebolt’s first official release. It includes four original hard hitting rock tunes in the rock/metal vein, but was updated with two more songs later on.Despite their mixed backgrounds, the members of the Norwegian band came together for one single reason: The love for old fashioned heavy metal and hard rock! The songs featured on their debut EP is a humble batch of rock’n’roll which has got both soul and playfulness written all over it. In short, it is an honest attempt to make the audience dig up their air guitars and put their pedals to the metal (although rather not at the same time!).It was the guitar riffs and solos, the big choruses and the unpretentious joy of bands such as AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Iron Maiden which lead to the foundation of Rebolt during the winter of 2004. The band had previously recorded two four-track demos under the ad-hoc name of Powerage back in 2004 and 2005. Although they were both crammed with impressive tunes, the sound quality of these early recordings left much to be desired. This time around there were much more studio time at hand, a fact which without doubt reveals itself on the refined finished product. The guitar sounds better than ever, the drums are solid and powerful, the bass is dense and rocksteady and the shining vocals are as dynamic and energetic as they are on stage. The sum of it all is a cliché, but still spot on: this is hard hitting as hell!Rebolts energetic and charismatic singer Frode is in the centre of the stage, claiming the attention of the audience right from the first note to the final riff. This is a rock singer who can smile and look people in the eye all at once, and still sing as if his lungs were bleeding. This get-up-and-go attitude both on record and on stage has lead to support jobs for internationally recognized Norwegian bands such as Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band and Span among others.Rebolt was founded on the basic idea that it was possible to be serious about music without trying to «save» rock by attempting to be knights in shining armour. The musical background of the four members would usually imply that they were poles apart, but their diverse individual credentials from jazz, rock and funk among other genres, have in fact proved to be their greatest strength. Other encouraging acts include Rose Tattoo, The Cult, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Danzig.During the years which has gone since Rebolt’s formation, the quartet has managed to ...
