Long Beach, CA, trio the Valley Arena seem to be on a one-band quest to retake the term "emo" away from its current "pretty boys in eyeliner and floppy haircuts" mall-punk overtones and back to the glory days of the early to mid-'90s, when a string of bands in Chicago, Louisville, and (mostly) Washington, D.C., were growing bored enough with hardcore and developing enough instrumental mastery to create a new breed of earnest but often engaging punk- and metal-influenced rock. Strong echoes of first-wave acts like Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu, and Shudder to Think reverberate through the trio's second album. Occasionally, this sense of nostalgia might cause the listener to dismiss the Valley Arena as second- or third-generation copyists, as on "Perfume Has Expired," with its excessively typey high-register guitar drone, strained vocals, and lyrics incorporating phrases from old advertising pitches in place of actual insight. But when the band really kicks in, on tracks like the atypically catchy "Keep It Discreet," which seems to bear an unexpected influence from Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and the ghostly "I Was a Wrecking Ball," the Valley Arena deliver on their Dischord Records promise. ~ Stewart Mason
Additional personnel: Talia Rose (vocals).

Sesso Vita album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances ...

$12.15 DAMNZAL BIOGRAPHY Damnzal prides itself in being a band of three hard playing grrls and one very loud guy, spewing forth a heavy mash of new edge punk/metal tunes that fans of contemporary heavy music would enjoy. The ferocity in the Damnzal songs is confronting and at times quite brutal, yet the band appeals to fans of all “rock” genres because of the diversity in the quality of song-writing and innovation in the approach to writing heavier edged music. The current CD which was mastered by Drew Lavyne (Foo Fighters, RHCP) hits the listener “like a freight train on heat” with infectious riffs and hooks that collide in a mixture of extreme, hardcore and melodic types of metal as well as seventies style punk The band members came together in early 2003 and consists of Tania Pennisi on lead vocals (ex Ruby Doomsday), Paula Condell on lead guitar (ex Velvet Hammer, Spine Of God), Vanessa Payne on bass guitar (ex Ruby Doomsday) and Scott Danson on drums (ex Cyclone Tracy). Each band member has a history within the Australian music industry and each have been actively involved in the scene for several years whether it be in previous musical projects, bands, releasing vinyl/CDs/DVD's, video production, touring, merchandising etc. Previous projects of the band members achieved significant success in their own right. The songwriting is done by lead gutarist, Paula, yet the band members bring in their own influences, helping to create the overall vibe and ambience which personifies the Damnzal philosophy and style. The influences range from extreme, hardcore and melodic types of metal as well as seventies style punk. So the deal is to provide ...
