In a way, Dwight Yoakam had been working up to DWIGHT SINGS BUCK for his whole career. Buck Owens's '60s Bakersfield honky-tonk sound was the primary influence on Yoakam's career, and the latter emerged in the '80s as the proud bearer of the ... Full DescriptionBakersfield torch. One of Yoakam's earliest hits was in fact a duet with Owens. So it's only natural that in the wake of Buck's passing, his disciple should honor him with a tribute album. Yoakam tackles both classic Owens tunes, such as the evergreen "Act Naturally" and "Crying Time," and more esoteric fare. Often he plays it straight, sticking close to his hero's template, but even when he takes a few liberties with the material, it remains clear just how much of a formative effect this music has had on Yoakam, and how deeply it's ingrained in his own musical makeup. $12.75 Dwight Yoakam is the Baskin-Robbins of heartbreak, turning out more variations on classic lovelorn themes than anyone might have thought possible. As he's done dependably since the mid-1980s, the man who put New Traditionalism on the country music map brings the Buck Owens/Merle Haggard sound into the present, with occasional rock and blues touches. Yoakam reaches even further back on the mournful ballad "Lucky That Way," building on a classic Hank Williams-style template. But he can be unpredictable ...

A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER GET OLD, is straight honky-tonk in the Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell tradition. ...

Dwight Sings Buck Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews ANOTHER CLASSIC FROM DWIGHT FOR BUCK This is an amazing tribute to Dwight's dear friend,
the late great Buck Owens. This isn't a collection of lifeless carbon copy covers of Owen's classics like
the Derailers tribute. Dwight puts his own unique
spin on these songs and makes them his own
which adds up to one incredible album. He's
never sounded better and I'm sure Buck would
be very pleased with what Dwight has done to
keep his memory alive. I rate this album up
there with "This Time", "A Long Way Home",
and "If There Was A Way". Vintage Dwight
doing vintage Buck! What more could you ask for? Submitted by emclark55 (BATTLE CREEK, MI. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dwight Does Buck Proud I really love the enthusiasm, creativity and mastery Dwight brings to this album. It's a real joy to listen to, and I have many, many times now. It's one of my favorite "go to" albums and it never fails to make me happy. Dwight's voice and his band are in excellent form. Buck would be very proud of this album, and honored by his friend. Love it all!! Submitted by Brenda (Fairfax, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another winner from Dwight For some reason dwight seems to get left out of the country scene today, probally because he actually has talent, and is not all about attitude as many other so called artists, this guy writes most of his music produces it,and then records songs in a way you can enjoy, something missing from most music today, this cd is another example of great talent,a cd you can listen to without wanting to skip tracks due to filler music that other artists have.buy this cd,together again is my personal fav! An excellent compilation (...continued) I rate this album a '3 star' by error in my posting. PLEASE change this to a FIVE star! Thanks Submitted by Clarence Malenfant (Ottawa ON Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
If you like Dwight or Buck or both, get this. Dwight really poured his soul into this album to pay homage to his mentor and it's pretty evident in his voice and playing. Each song is easily recognizable as Buck Owens, but also given that rock-a-billy touch that Dwight Yoakam has made famous. Get this if you're a fan, check it out if you're not yet a fan.
