| | Robert Wyatt Comicopera CD Robert Wyatt Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
As with all of his '00s output, Wyatt trades in the exploratory psych-prog of his early '70s work in favor of elegant and ornate jazz arrangements. His voice--an unsung treasure of British rock--remains the centering constant here, as Wyatt's ... Full Descriptionorchestrations swing from the mellow and alluring ("Just As You Are" and "You You") to the disquieting ("Fragment" and "Cancion de Julieta," which also find Wyatt abandoning English in favor of Spanish and Italian lyrics). While Wyatt's conceptual ambitions might be hard to grasp in detail, the tracks haunt and never need elaboration, placing COMIC OPERA amongst his best works as a solo artist.
First with his legendary band the Soft Machine and then as a solo artist, Robert Wyatt has never been afraid of a hefty conceit in his music. Fittingly, COMIC OPERA--his Domino records debut and first since 2003's CUCKOOLAND--continued Robert Wyatt's impressive string of late period solo records by focusing on nothing less than the innate comedy of the human condition. Wyatt presents an opus divided into three acts--"Lost in Noise," "The Here and the Now," and "Away With the Fairies"--centered around what he called the "unpredictable mischief of real life."

Spin (p.128) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Structured like an opera in three hazy 'acts,' the CD is like spending a cloudy afternoon on Jupiter....Haunting..." Uncut (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[E]ach song works brilliantly in isolation, making this a treasure trove of Wyatt's finest work ever." Magnet (p.113) - "[T]here's perhaps nothing prettier than the steel drum-driven 'On The Town Square'....COMICOPERA is a masterpiece..." The Wire (p.64) - "A superb album, in which Wyatt gathers all of his strengths...the personal and the political, the aesthetic and the ethical are brought together as only he can." The Wire (p.36) - Ranked #1 in The Wire's "Top Ten Records of the Year 2007" -- "Even by Wyatt's standards of honest, self-examining songwriting, COMICOPERA was a proper gut-spiller." Down Beat (p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Wyatt is an earnest vocalist who maintains the thread of improvisation and playful melody in his performances." No Depression (p.108) - "[W]ith haunting melodies, intelligent lyrics, arrangements that are both organic and atmospheric...and vocals that are among the most heartbreakingly plaintive this side of Chet Baker..." "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and ...

$14.49 ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH could not be farther from the rock world. Closer to Eno's ambient works of the '80s and '90s, it melds song form and traditional lyric-based templates with a floating, ethereal sonic palette. A couple of the tracks here feature female vocals, but most are centered around Eno's own voice, a measured, low-key, yet surprisingly poignant thing that emanates spirituality and ...

$6.69 The [MA]inline Project The [MA]inline Project could not be named any better than it is, for this music is like a mainline right to your heart. Only, instead of heartstopping drugs, its adrenaline pumping electronica. Be ready to get swept up in the mesmerizing talents of this artist, whose works of trance, house and drum and bass are set to sweep the dance world with vital energy and captivating textures. The [MA]inline Project prides itself on taking classic dance sounds and revitalizing them in interesting and new ways without sacrificing the perfect appeal of these developed genres with loyal fanbases. Totality It could be said that music is the totality of all things, experience in all its myriad aspects, every significant fraction of it, wrapped together into a form that is universally accessible and sublimely powerful. That, at least, is what this artist recognizes in music. And this artist is right. Without appreciation of the depths of the human soul to which music can extend, one cannot write music of the utmost creativity. “Music makes me feel everything,” says The [MA]inline Project. Electronica has a particular ability to capture human emotion and mold it, achieving both catharsis and uplift, the soul's orgasm, if you will. And The [MA]inline Project shoots for this effectiveness in every track. Flow Flow is vital to the way music functions and this is perhaps nowhere more noticeable than in the life of an electronic song, from where it starts, to the buildup, to the massive conclusion and every little bit in between. Flow is extremely necessary and must be monitored with the keenest attention to the art. “The way a song flows has the ability to make me happy, sad or angry.” The [MA]inline Project's attention to this detail brings great depth to the artist's creations. Soundtrack Music should capture something of the truth of life. In other words, it should be a soundtrack. ...
