(4 Customer Reviews)
Continuing its trajectory towards a fuller alt-rock sound, the punk-pop act Jimmy Eat World enlisted help from revered producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage) for its 2007 outing, CHASE THIS LIGHT, making the album a natural progression from '04's FUTURES, which was helmed by Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen). Fronted by earnest singer/guitarist Jim Adkins, the Arizona quartet unveils its more expansive aesthetic most effectively on the soaring single "Big Casino," which plays nicely off of the thoughtful, chiming "Carry You," and other assured, guitar-driven tracks. While longtime fans won't be surprised by the group's impressive evolution, new fans will marvel at what they've been missing.

Rolling Stone (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he churning political punk tune 'Electable' and the tambourine-shaking burner 'Feeling Lucky' -- make clear the band isn't afraid of the taut power-pop pleasures of JIMMY EAT WORLD..." Spin (p.125) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Loss and redemption are CHASE THIS LIGHT's dominant themes....The record is crisply produced, with jittery, epic songs..." Entertainment Weekly (p.126) - "Their sumptuous fifth album, CHASE THIS LIGHT, is what emo should sound like: big emotions, sure, but also big hooks, big stakes. And big rewards." Alternative Press (p.172) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The band take a few successful stylistic detours on CHASE THIS LIGHT..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[T]his is a glorious album of addictive hooks, heartfelt emotion and irresistible, smile-inducing charm." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.71) - Ranked #11 in Kerrang's "The Top 20 Albums Of 2007" -- "[I]t's genius, and no-one does it better." Jimmy Eat World Chase This Light Songs Chase This Light Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Another GREAT Jimmy record!! This band never ceases to amaze. "Big Casino" is an excellent first single, "Dizzy" is a closing mini-epic masterpiece, and in between are elements of their best work from "Clarity", "Bleed American", and "Futures". JEW is arguably the most consistent band in the pop/rock arena for the last ten years. Superb playing and top-notch songwriting add up to a GREAT, GREAT record!! Shweet (= Hmm well, this is the best ablum in my collections of others so far. I'm into many genres of music, but I this album is very good. Even my mother likes it when she listened to sone of their songs. My parents actually likes Jimmy Eat World. My parents hated basically all the music I listened to, except Linkin Park. I was shocked to find this out. Because I have a taste in punk, I loved the song Electable. My favorite song apart from Pain, I favored Big Casino. It was something. This album is worth the price. Get it =) Submitted by Adrienne (Ocean City, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An Amazing Album! Jimmy Eat World has come out with another masterpiece. This album was well worth the 3-year wait after Futures. "Dizzy" is another one of those amazing final tracks the band has been known to make ever since Static Prevails. "Let It Happen" is an amazingly catchy song, and "Gotta Be Somebody's Blues" really adds to the diversity of this album. This is definately worth buying! Still retaining from Bleed American, circa 2001 The knack may hold true and you can't ignore these guys for trying a carbon copy of a magnum opus that I hold true in my collection along with Futures that came along back in 2004. Foo Fighters held the same pattern that this band is holding up is the 3-year break between albums. Maybe it's time to do some fine-tuning considering what Foo Fighters just dropped the worst album of their career since One by One back in 2002. This band is starting to do so as they age past 30. Could things do better next time around is if things weren't so rushed cause Chase This Light sounds like it's aching with too much emo much to my chagrin. The running time is also suspect which must be a delight to mainstream tastebuds right now. But, hey. That's only an opinion and high brow on my part. The jaw-dropper much to dismay is on a track called "Gotta Be Somebody's Blues" while the rest still retains the value that was lost on Futures which to me is considered their much serious record of their career to say the least. Smile high; the quirks are back on Chase This Light. If you think they're carbon copy of Weezer, then Pinkerton is in the style of Futures. Chase This Light is trying too hard to emulate with the times. The expectations look pretty weak and vague if you ask me what's destined after Chase This Light finishes playing and you're left wondering in the dark. $9.49 Even though Avenged Sevenfold's first two albums clearly got them lumped into the emo camp, the California quintet always hinted at the heavy metal influence of bands like Iron Maiden. With their major-label debut CITY OF EVIL, not only have they fleshed out these tendencies via the intricate riffing of dual guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, but they've begun to dabble with more intricate, prog-like song structures. And with singer M. Shadows recovering from vocal chord surgery, he employs a considerably more melodic approach.
The first half of CITY cleaves to what longtime fans have come to expect: dive-bombing call-and-response riffing and furious double-bass-drum attacks, peppering ...

$12.05 Finland's favorite retro-rockers rev up with a generous 26-song, 75-minute set of music recorded live, predominantly in 1998 and on their home turf. Except for some brief introductions in both English and the band's native tongue, this is a non-stop roller coaster ride through instrumental rock & roll. The quartet plays with fire and fury whether covering genre classics like "Telstar" or obscurities such as Roy Budd's theme to "Get Carter." Not surprisingly, a Ventures tune gets worked in, but the group digs deep into the California band's catalog to unearth "Fugitive." The foursome charges through a unique combination of Bernard Herrmann's themes from Psycho and Vertigo in a composite renamed "Psyko." "Mission Impossible" also gets the Laika treatment as they speed and trash it up in a breathless version that doesn't break the two-minute mark. While not as recognizable, the group churns out originals with as much flair touching on hard rock with a slight Spanish matador approach on "Look! No Head!" and the "Walk Don't Run"-styled "Floating" which stands as a contemporary surf classic. Many of these tracks appear in less frantic fashion on the band's studio albums, but the live approach electrifies these versions. Certainly you'll never hear "Ode to Billy Joe" the same way after experiencing Laika's take on the song (which they rename "Sauna-Soul" for no apparent reason). With its extended playing time, there is plenty of room for experimentation on a low-down run-through of Henry Mancini's "Experiment ...

$15.95 In 1972, a rapper was born not knowing he was supposed to be involved with the Gospel. The place was Long Island, New York and when his mother had her ultrasound, it was reported that the doctor heard tight lyrics going along with the heartbeat at the same time. As a child he developed his unique ear for music by experimenting with beats using pots, pans, and cardboard boxes. After his parents divorce, Minista -V- became rebellious and was lured to the sights and sounds of the streets. While experiencing the rise of Hip-Hop through his residence in both Brooklyn, and Long Island, his first song was composed in 1988. Between this time and 1994, -V- was a gifted lyricist coming straight out of the New York tradition of hardcore Hip-Hop. However, while doing secular rap, deep down inside he still felt an empty feeling that went away in 1995 when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. After this powerful transformation which changed his life forever, his music leaned towards less negative themes. After studying the Word of God, Minista -V- completely abandoned secular music altogether. The result now is his unique, exciting street style of Gospel Hip-Hop with versatile ranges, from socially conscious, soul-convicting hardcore rhymes over melodic grooves, to up-tempo “spirit-stirring” cuts. After writing his first Gospel song entitled “Devil Fightin’ Spirit” in 1996, he has received exposure at church events, youth explosions, prisons, and community programs through his membership with the Underground Gospel Ministries Inc. His first CD entitled “The Flesh Killah” was released in 2000. Following the buzz of his first CD and the many souls that were affected by it, he dropped another one later on that was more powerful and anointed than the first one. He writes his own material, arranges, and produces his own tracks for both CD’s. With the latest CD entitled “Survival” many people throughout the nation have been blessed and the presence of God has been ushered in by songs such as “No Fears, No Tears” and “Holy Ghost Groovin”. Through his affiliation with the Underground Gospel Ministries, Minista -V- had the opportunity to open shows for artist such as Trinity 5-7, Mary Mary, Tonex, Tye Tribbett, Charles Wolfork, Jessica Care Moore, Reverend Run, The Cross Movement, Dawkins & Dawkins, Karen Clarke Sheard, Kiki Sheard, and Papa San. He has also opened up for Gospel comedian “Bone” and TV/Movie-Christian personalities Anthony Griffith and Sheri Shepherd. Through the Underground, Minista -V- was ...
