Personnel: Peter Swanson (vocals, electronics); Emil Amos (guitar). Audio Mixer: Emil Amos. Arranger: Emil Amos. On their second album for Load, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson again make a lot of righteously gloomy noise soundscapes for the masses -- they wouldn't have it any other way, of course. With Daniel Voss again providing engineering help while Marcelo Spina oversees production, Yellow Swans begin the album with the title track, a slow swell of a throbbing dark rhythm the bedrock for a series of overlaid drones and feedback wails, Swanson's guitar turning slowly into a triumphant crescendo somewhere between a minimal sitar piece and pure overload. It's perhaps the most straightforwardly rock thing the band has recorded in some time but even then it's not quite normal, and a good thing too. From there much of the album seems to take on a desert theme, at least due to three successive song titles -- "Stretch the Sands," "Our Oases," and "Mass Mirage." Alliteration and assonance aside, all three find Swanson fully embracing space rock dramatics filtered through the vast soundscapes created by the likes of Flying Saucer Attack, sheets of feedback howl and moan turning into something utterly transcendent, with "Our Oases" the most spectacular example even while being the shortest in length. "Endlessly Making an End of Things" concludes the album in a more astringent fashion initially, though like the opener more and more sound builds on it while mournful wordless vocals snake through the mix in counterpoint like distant siren songs. ~ Ned RaggettThe Wire (p.64) - "[They] combine the swelling intensity of formless noise with a kind of anthemic guitar blitz. The sound they make is inescapably huge." | | Field From Here We Go Sublime CD (2007) (Import) Germany
At All Ends
$14.79 On 2007's FROM HERE WE GO SUBLIME, Axel Willner's first full-length Kompakt outing under the moniker of the Field, the Swedish electronica artist presents a mesmerizing set of minimalist techno that garnered international raves. Sometimes working in the same dreamy vein as fellow Europeans Ulrich Schnauss and M83 (see the arctic opener, "Over the Ice"), Willner streamlines that aesthetic, and steers it into deep house and trance territory (the propulsive "Good Things End"), resulting in an album that's wholly appropriate for both headphones and dance floors. While those who lean towards warmer, more organic-sounding electronic music may ...

At All Ends
$15.79 Heidi Propp, born June 4, 1981, began her musical career at the tender age of six, whereupon she began playing the piano and exercising her vocal prowess by singing with countless choirs and organizations. She also experimented with a number of instruments besides the piano, mastering the sax and eventually adding the guitar to her repertoire. Her musical schooling afforded her the opportunity to perform as a soloist in the stage play ‘Hair’, as well as in ‘Noah's Flood’, which traveled throughout Canada and into parts of the United States. Other highlights of her career have included opening the 1999 Peace Games with her flawless rendition of "O Canada", and singing alongside Pavarotti for then-President Bill Clinton in the summer of 1995, when she performed at the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. In 2001 she joined the Eleanor Fulcher Talent Agency, where she was encouraged to participate in New York City's 2002 IMTA competition, and subsequently outshone four thousand contestants to win the title ‘Vocalist of the Year’. Returning to Toronto with such notable honors, Heidi entered the studio with producer Steve Sherman and set to work on such projects as ‘Wonder Girl’ and, later, collaborated with Canadian fiction author and lyricist, Laurie Lonsdale (www.authorsden.com/laurielonsdale), providing superlative vocals for three songs that ...
