Following an acrimonious split with Wind-Up Records, the Atlanta-based hard-rock act Alter Bridge soldiered on with 2007's BLACKBIRD, a set of post-grunge anthems staunchly in the vein of its debut, ONE DAY REMAINS. The former members of Creed have clearly gelled with their new lead vocalist, Myles Kennedy, who often evokes Chris Cornell with his powerhouse singing, as best exemplified by the soaring single, "Rise Today."
Alter Bridge: Myles Kennedy (vocals, guitar); Mark Tremonti (guitar, background vocals); Brian Marshall (bass guitar); Scott Phillips (drums).
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[I]t's the title-track that's BLACKBIRD's stand-out moment. Considerably darker in both subject matter and tone, it's a genuinely moving, eight-minute beast of a song..." Alter Bridge Blackbird Songs Blackbird Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Alter Bridge Is Here To "Rise Today" (4.5 stars) To start off short, Blackbird is head and shoulders above One Day Remains. How exactly? Allow me to explain. First of all, I would just like to say that I hate, no, DESPISE Creed. I always saw them as just a cliched and generic modern rock band with no talent and annoying melodies. So, by curiosity, I gave Alter Bridge's debut a listen, and was extremely surprised. Kennedy was a GOOD vocalist, unlike Stapp! And Tremonti could solo! However, I couldnt help but feeling he was shredding too much, and didnt seem very versatile. Also, I still couldn't help but notice the Creed-ish sounds present within their debut, still consisting of that generic alternative sound, and I'm one who listens to very little alternative and a lot more classic hard rock (Aerosmith, VH, GN'R, etc.). But enter Blackbird, and everything changes. There are numerous qualitites that make Blackbird miles above the debut, particularily the fact that the Creed and alternative cliched sound is nonexistant on this record. Instead it's replaced with a more classic metal influence. The album is heavier than the debut, but also much more melodic. The melodies and riffs are catchier and more "hook" oriented. Kennedy's vocals are much better, and Tremonti is playing more melodic solos and doesnt just play fast. He still shreds on this album, but only for the right amount of time so the solo's hook is showcased, and I believe it takes much more talent to do that than just shredding for long periods of time. The songs are also overall written, performed, and constructed much better. You get a bigger chunk of their heavy rockers (Buried Alive, Ties That Bind, Come To Life), hard rockin' anthems (Rise Today, Before Tomorrow Comes), and ballads (Brand New Start, Wayward One, and the classic-influenced and sure to be a classic Watch Over You). On top of that, you also get the epic title track, a progressive 8-minute masterpiece and serves as the band's "Stairway to Heaven", just less ballad-like. I still wish they would've done something with One By One and Break Me Down, which are fairly weak, but that's only 2 songs. This is a consistant metal album. The alternative style is pretty much abandoned and that's definitely for the better. You can really tell Alter Bridge is really rockin' their hearts out on this one, and not just playing it safe by keeping it generic, evident on the debut. Let's just hope they keep it up! Alter Bridge is here to "Rise Today!" Submitted by Brendan (Allentown, Pa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 4 found this helpful.

Leaves the debut in the dust And what a debut One Day Remains was. It showed what potential Alter Bridge had once they found themselves. And found themselves they have. Blackbird is the true essence of what AB is. One Day Remains could never be Alter Bridges true sound, as Myles is a gifted gutiarist and songwritter himself, and his talent was added to the arsenal for Blackbird. Blackbird is a better album then One Day Remains in every way possible. Its heavier, catchier, more subtle and complex, more varied then ODR ever was. Its on this album that we see what brian and flip can do, as they rarely let loose on the debut, but on Blackbird, they give it everything on every song. Myles blusey guitar work compliments Marks very well, such as colouring songs such as brand new start and wayward one, or his solo and licks on the title track. Mark is getting better as a gutiarist, he is more varied and confident on this album, and the gutiar work is more hook orintated and tastful, as opposed to the showy nature of One Day Remains, (I dont mind either way, Alter Bridge is that good). Whats great about their albums is that it doesnt matter if your song or album orintated, go for catchy well sung vocals, or good musicianship alter bridge is the band for you, they appeal to anyone who loves rock, weather its metal, soft rock, ballards, rock and roll, epic progressive rock, theres something for all. No matter how many times i listen to them, no matter how long or often, i never get sick of them. Instead of dying out and getting old like most radio friendly rock, alter bridge gets better with time. This is how rock is supposed to be done, if you dont like it, your into pop or hip-hop, this is music for real rock fans, not poppy teenie boppers. Support music as an artform, not music as a commodity. 20 stars at the least for this album. Submitted by Cavan Ray (Perth, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
From the Ashes of Creed came BlackBird. I was a bit hesitant to pick up this album at best buy, holding it and the best buy special edition in my hand and wondering if the move away from WU records to Atlantic helped get rid of the post grunge creed style of rock that the freshmen album provided to the mainstream music listener. I bought the special edition (3 More tracks, i suggest you get them if you liked this CD, they are entitled "New Way to Live" witch is my personal fav of the three, "We don't Even Care" and "The Damage Done") I have to say that i was wowed from start to finish, and what a finish it was! The CD starts out with "Ties that Bind" a hard hitting alternative metal style song that knocks creed lovers out with its hard rock style (Creed eat your heart out). It then moves on to the Kornesk "Come to Life" With its electron influenced almost rap style vocals and hard rock riff. We then get Brand new start, a softer balled style song, moving to "Buried Alive", a song almost like "One Day Remains." We then move to a small and welcome soft rock ballad style stretch of 2 songs, "Before Tomorrow Comes" and "Rise Today" a nice addition to the cd in full. We move to the 8 minuet long "Blackbird" that i will dive into a bit more later. The final songs all finish out this 13 track master epic worthy of Zeppelin 4 or even the masterful AC/DC Black Album. Ending with the huge maga ballad"Wayward One" that shows the Love, and the pain in a song that reminds me of "Wanted Dead Or Alive" Finaly we get back to the most important and underrated(By the Media) Track, "Blackbird" A song that quickly took the spot of not only my favorite Alter Bridge song (End is Here)and possible my favorite Song of all time (3rd Planet, modest mouse, is number 2 now) The 8 minuet long Stairway or Bohemian Rhapsody style epic tells the narrative tale of a man after loosing a loved one traveling a long distance home, and the parallel journey of the past loved ones soul headed home as well (Heaven Bro) With a super powerful solo that might be the best solo ever, strong fillers on base and drums, and the opera style vocals backed with steller harmonics this song is quite possibly the best song ever written. Now i return to the only song on the cd that gets lower then 5 stars, "One By One", it got 4. The only ill mark on what i think is rock and roll perfection and will one day be noticed as one of the best CDs ever made. Oh and by the way "One By One" is still a Good Song, just to much like creed still. The Album "Blackbird" "Unfurls its wings... and Flies away" from the ashes of creed, like the Phoenix that Alter Bridge is. Blackbird
$20.25 Combining powerful, crystal clear vocals, haunting melodies and arresting, earnest lyrics that will not soon be forgotten, Edmonton’s piano-pop songstress Heather Hutchison has already embarked on an impressive musical journey, one which is far from coming to a close. She has accomplished a great deal for an artist with such a fresh career, since being chosen from hundreds of acts as a finalist in Alberta’s Talent Explosion in 2004 where she made the acquaintance of her now producer Brock Skywalker (formerly of the award-winning Edmonton band Captain Tractor). She has already released two CDs of original material, "Hello" (2005) and "Charades" (2007), books frequent shows throughout Alberta and seeks to tour extensively in the coming years. This young artist is poised and ready to build on her already impressive list of accomplishments.Heather was born blind, and from a young age, music was an integral part of her world. She spent much time in her early years making up her own melodies or picking out songs by ear on the piano, and grew up listening to a diverse array of artists such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, Alanis Morisette, Aretha Franklin and Burton Cummings. She cites later musical influences including Evanescence, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Vienna Teng, Sarah Slean, Joni Mitchell and Coldplay. Hints of these artists are evident in her music, but in the end, Heather’s voice and songs, strikingly powerful and rich with honesty and emotion are her own.On her sophomoric release “Charades”, (December, 2007), Heather tackles the struggles and triumphs of life in an introspective and poignant manner. There’s the tongue and cheek Latin-tinged “Taxi Driver”, a song with a strong hook which pokes fun at the theoretical mishaps of a blind driver, or the upbeat and hopeful “The One Thing I Can Promise” that one can’t help but sing along to. And on the other side of the spectrum, there’s the heartbreaking “Taking Back My Life”, a ballad discussing the long and often difficult journey to forgiveness, speaking to an artist who has seen and understood more of life than her years would suggest. The recording boasts the talents of Canadian music veterans Stew Kirkwood, Brock Skywalker and some ...
