ARISTOCRAT IN SPIRIT(George Kharabadze’s album “Aristocrats”)Written by HANNESS, August 18, 2006.It happens pretty seldom nowadays, when one has possibility to listen to an album up to the end in a one listening session. There is always something in between to interrupt the process. But the melodies of this album have a very special feature; they capture your attention from the very beginning and lead you in a very powerful way through all the telephone calls, running minor problems and “musts”, like sounds of a Pans flute have probably attracted all the inhabitants of the Hellenic forest to its captivating source... This roughly 45 minutes album consists of 19 pieces interacting in a perfect harmony and building up the main album conception, beautiful combination of some nostalgic, romantic feelings, full of a gentle and intelligent thoughts. The first 3 pieces “Tamsi”, “Thinking of You” and “Sonnet” create very nice intro to the whole project. The next part, that includes the compositions “Grapes Plant”, “Mother”, “Father”, “Stream” and “Home”, it’s a charming cordial story about the land of the origin. But is it somehow connected to any geographic point? Can we, going deeper through the sounds sometimes slightly, sometimes strongly colored in sort of a folk fragrance, guess, where to place this land geographically? Strangely, Polysics or Die!!!! Vista varies drastically from Polysics' earlier greatest-hits record, Polysics or Die!!! Only six songs from the previous disc make the cut of the new MySpace Records release, further proving that choosing a list of Polysics' best singles is no easy task. That said, this compilation seems to be better thought out and serves as an excellent introduction to the poppier side of the band, despite the omission of some of their finest songs, most notably "XCT" from Neu. This disc may also be the only chance for fans outside of Japan to get the new songs "Electric Surfing," "I My Me Mine," "You-You-You," and "Catch on Everywhere" unless they were to buy Karate House as an import. For newbies wishing to learn about the group's sound, this is the perfect starting point, but it barely scratches the surface of their ten years of material. ~ Jason Lymangrover

Shade is an outstanding album of contemporary jazz from (mostly) tenor saxman Richard Cole. This album opens with a bang and a slightly larger ensemble in something of a tribute to Joe Henderson. Cole, as well as trumpeters Thomas Marriott and Randy Brecker, take some outstanding solos here. In pianist Bill Anschell's composition "Moxy," the band slims down to a quartet and combines a frenetic piano with Monk-inspired horns. A Fender Rhodes is called into play, along with an extra guitar, for a laid-back groove through "Red Suit" (written by Cole's brother), which also gives Brecker another showing on the trumpet. From end to end, it's a fine album, with a good showcase of Cole's sax skills as well as a supporting cast with outstanding abilities and a constant groove. ~ Adam Greenberg
