Like many bandleaders who record for the Sea Breeze label, trumpeter Brad Steinwehe has paid his dues as a sideman and long served as a jazz educator at the university level. His orchestra, which likewise seems to be made up of musicians much like himself, does justice to the mix of familiar jazz compositions and new works. Trumpeter/flugelhornist Karl Soukup contributed several charts, including a darkly swinging setting of Horace Silver's "Nutville" and a percolating scoring of "Seven Steps to Heaven." Many of the other composers whose work is featured are less well known, though the musicians make the most of each of these selections, leaving the listener wanting to hear more from their respective songbooks. Among the impressive soloists heard are alto and soprano saxophonists Mike Nelson, tenorist Steve Steinberg, pianist Irving Flores, and the leader. This CD also marks the return of altoist Christopher Hollyday (in the lush ballad "Lifelong Friend"), a promising artist who recorded several CDs for Novus in the late '80s and early '90s who suddenly seemed to disappear from the jazz recording scene without a trace. ~ Ken Dryden

JazzTimes (p.139) - "Kyle's plunger work on 'Desert Blues' is outstanding; ditto drummer Mike Holguin's gap-filling....And Steinwehe knows how to achieve crisp cut-offs and dynamic shadings." Nutville album
$10.09 The 21st century version of Run-D.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim and Gangstarr is here. The M.C. and DJ duo has returned in full force. With the combination of the universal style of P. Wize on the mic and the quick hands of DJ C4 on the one and twos and his ill beats, 9 Volt is bringing back "grass roots" hip-hop in full stream.P. Wize was born in Brooklyn, New York and now resides in East Orange, New Jersey. About ten years ago, P. Wize began his music career competing in local talent shows and performing in street parties combining the rough rhyme style he adopted in Brooklyn, with the more party oriented New Jersey sound. P. Wize was apart of a group who were signed to an independent label, but, due to creative differences, they were dropped from the label. P. Wize does not have any musical influences, but says, "anyone who writes from the heart, influences me to express myself."DJ C4 was also born and resides in Brooklyn, New York and acquired the love for music at a very early age. About eleven years ago, he began making mix tapes and dee jaying parties. His early musical influences include Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. DJ C4's musical influences in hip-hop include Run-D.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim and Public Enemy. DJ C4 was immediately dedicated and determined in learning and mastering the art of the scratch and becoming the "complete DJ" through hours and hours of practicing daily, mixing songs, switching from turntable to turntable at incredible speeds and creating funky melodic scratches. He was apart of a group that recorded several demos and performed at several showcases, but nothing came of it.In 2001, DJ C4 started his own record label, Doomzday Entertainment, Inc. and immediately started his hunt for an M.C. who possessed the hardcore and smooth ...
| | Michael Herring's Vertigo Coniferous Revenge CD (2006)
Nutville CD music
$12.65 Michael Herring’s Vertigo, Coniferous Revenge, featuring David Binneyrelease date: March 7, 2006Michael Herring’s Vertigo’s debut album, Coniferous Revenge, featuring David Binney (alto saxophone - New York), is the perfect blend of high energy solos and Herring’s artful and groovy modern jazz compositions. A collaboration born at downtown Toronto’s Rex Jazz and Blues Bar in front of a sold out crowd and refined in the studio, this album blends the excitement of new found synergy with focused performances.Coniferous Revenge boasts eleven Herring-penned compositions, with Binney heavily featured throughout, as well as a final good-bye with Jesse Winchester’s My Songbird, arranged by Herring to capture the lyrcal beauty of Emmylou Harris. The compositions groove hard, and while they stay true to their jazz roots (listen to Nachoff on Clancy’s New Belt Free Home), you can hear the influences of reggae, electonica, 20th Century classical, folk and even grunge rock.Drawing on the influence of New York's Downtown Jazz Scene, Michael Herring’s Vertigo mixes composed and improvised elements – both of which are driven by rhythmically sophisticated grooves. Herring’s work naturally possesses the voice of the younger New York Downtown scene – Herring tips his hat to Dave Holland, Scott Colley, Drew Gress, David Binney and Chris Potter – yet the compositions have much of the classic sixties sextet sound about them – respectively recalling Wayne Shorter and Booker Little at their height – an engaging and freshly innovative blend is the happy result. One other note of interest – the work is packaged in Steve Byram’s original art.Michael Herring’s Vertigo features the strongest voices in the next generation of Canadian Jazz: William Carn (trombone), Jesse Baird (drums), Quinsin Nachoff (tenor and clarinets), Don Scott (guitar), anchored by Michael Herring (double bass).“one of the most exciting and interesting [albums] to arrive this year… The ensemble passages are all rich in texture, catchy ...

| | Neal & Leandra Dancing With A Ghost CD (2007)
Nutville songs
$17.09 Neal Hagberg and Leandra Peak ended up on the road to music mostly by accident...Hagberg was on his way to medical school and Peak to a career in international business when the road veered. Since then they have found themselves singing to sold out thousand seat venues in some towns and four people and a sick dog (true story) in others.Leandra - private by nature - was dragged kicking and screaming into the spotlight. Even though she had acted in a professional theater group as a teenager, she had no desire to make a career out of it, and refused even to take solos in the high school choir. As a little girl, all she ever wanted was to be on Johnny Carson. Not for her voice, not for her writing or stage presence, but because she thought Johnny would simply find her funny. Neal thought a career in professional sports sounded good. Being a small college wishbone quarterback did not exactly prepare him for the NFL. It didn’t prepare him for the folk world either, but he figured at least in music he wouldn’t get landed on by 300 lb. noseguards. So, he wrote some songs, some people liked them, and he quit his med school plans to go on the road. He somehow convinced Leandra to go along. ...
