That enormous mop of Stevie Nicks-style rock-chick hair on the front cover of TAKING CHANCES is the first clue that this is a different sort of album for Celine Dion. The formerly carefully coiffed French Canadian singer's first mainstream pop ... Full Descriptioneffort since 2002's A NEW DAY HAS COME, TAKING CHANCES is Dion's rock album. Guest producers and songwriters include former Evanescence co-leader Ben Moody, Canadian hard rocker Aldo Nova, Britpop master Kimberley Rew (of Soft Boys and Katrina and the Waves fame), and Linda Perry, who wrote and produced hits for Pink and Christina Aguilera, among others. Over the course of these 16 songs, Dion applies her bombastic, unapologetically operatic vocal style to an entirely new context, and the combination works well. Perry, Rew, and Moody in particular have previous experience working with female singers with big voices, so their songs match Dion's expressive vocal power with wailing guitars, dramatic piano crescendos, and subtle reminders of the rock of arenas past, from BORN TO RUN-era Bruce Springsteen to Heart's power ballad days. Indeed, one of the album's highlights is perhaps the definitive version of Heart's "Alone." While not noisy enough to worry Dion's easy-listening fans, TAKING CHANCES lives up to its title admirably.

Buoyed by the massive club-oriented hit "Gimme More," the record sports a slick, nearly armor-like techno veneer that extends to every track, from the pulsing above-mentioned single to the tinny "Toy Soldier" to the R&B-tinged "Why Should I Be Sad." While Spears takes on media criticism most directly on the Vocoder-laced "Piece of Me," she also offers up some giddy escapism, most notably on the floating synth-pop of "Heaven on Earth," a strong contender for BLACKOUT's finest moment. Although the album doesn't erase many of Britney's woes, it arguably serves as her best record since OOPS!... I DID IT AGAIN, and that alone should make it a delight for many fans.
Issued in late 2007, BLACKOUT is the much-touted comeback album that was designed to pull Britney Spears out from under the considerably large personal and professional shadows that had crept into her life. From Spears's bizarre head-shaving incident to her parental custody struggles to her critically reviled MTV Video Music Awards performance, most of the year was an exceedingly long train wreck for the pop superstar, and those events, to some degree, inform BLACKOUT, which stands out as a defiantly bold dance-pop offering.

One of the great homemade masterpieces of the 1970s, George Brigman's JUNGLE ROT is the sound of youthful hero worship gone gleefully off the deep end. Conceived as a tribute to British psych-blues band the Groundhogs and their leader Tony McPhee, the album takes that bands' acid-fried boogie and warps it with gloriously primitive recoding techniques and the fevered isolation in which Brigman worked. The title track alone with its fuzz-damaged guitar pan and punishing four-on-the-floor rhythms is worth the price of admission, yet the rest of the album delivers equally inspired wallops of technical brilliance and blown-out acid shred. While Brigman continued to hone his chops in the ensuing decades, he did so once again in relative anonymity. In the mean time, JUNGLE ROT became a collectors' sensation, finally receiving an official reissue in 2005.
