(1 Customer Review)
LIVING HARD has a newfound bluesy rock edge that's a bit different from Gary Allan's previous, more traditionalist strain of Nashville country, but it feels more like an exploration of a slightly different sound than a naked pop crossover attempt. Tough outlaw rockers like "Wrecking Ball" sit comfortably next to power ballads like "Learning How To Bend" and winsome love songs like "She's So California." While the album seems less intensely personal than 2005's TOUGH ALL OVER (which was written and recorded in the aftermath of his wife's suicide), a strain of emotional loss still reverberates through many of these songs; even the soaring first single, "Watching Airplanes," has a melancholy edge. However, these songs are tempered by the rebellious title track and the wry bad-boy anthem "Like It's A Bad Thing."

| | Toby Keith Big Dog Daddy CD (2007)
Living Hard album
$9.05 BIG DOG DADDY is the first album that Toby Keith wrote and produced on his own, and it features a harder edge than most of his previous records, closer to the country-rock of the Big and Rich axis than the neo-traditionalist crowd. In fact, BIG DOG DADDY seems like a sort of mid-career reset, a canny move for a country singer who sees musical trends changing on the horizon. Social ...

| | Bathory Twilight Of The Gods CD (1991)
Living Hard music CDs
$15.79 It was almost inevitable that a follow-up release to 1990's watershed Hammerheart album, dealing with very much the same subject (historical themes and pagan beliefs of the Viking peoples), was fated to prove somewhat disappointing; and despite a valiant effort on the part of Bathory mastermind Seth Quorthon, 1991's Twilight of the Gods has often unfairly languished in the shadows of its noteworthy predecessor. For the record, its tracks were even more epic in length and scope, its subject matter even more tragic and depressing, but perhaps the oppressive weight of it all was simply more than most could bear. Still, when removed from this chronological experiment, there's no denying that Twilight of the Gods is one heck of a heavy metal album. Maybe it could have used a little more of the old-school black metal simplicity of early Bathory, but the band's forward momentum was such at this juncture in their career that a look back, however brief, was simply not in the cards. Starting off with the 14-minute glory of the title opus, the album almost always maintains a steady head of steam with the high-caliber songwriting heard on the likes of "Blood and Iron" and "Under the Runes," with its specially beautiful and memorable acoustic guitar intro. The superb ...
