In his powerfully insightful book of blues-inspired poetry Fattening Frogs for Snakes -- Delta Sound Suite, John Sinclair cites blues and jazz scholar Robert Palmer as a source for the theory that the linguistic taproots of the word "boogie" probably reach back to West Africa, as the Hausa "buga" and the Mandingo "bug" both mean "to beat" as in "to beat a drum." This makes sense given the rhythmic potency of boogie-woogie, a style that emerged during the early 20th century among Southern black laborers who lived, toiled, and partied near the very bottom of the U.S. social hierarchy, usually living in an environment that was secluded from the rest of the population and often engaging in the production of turpentine. There are other distinct levels of meaning and purpose here: the subject of blackness, the act of partying in order to blow off steam, and the performer's utility function as a provider of music in order to keep the participants from brawling. Sometimes carelessly criticized for its apparent simplicity, the boogie is as complex as human nature itself. Popularized by white big bands during the 1930s and '40s, boogie-woogie also helped to spawn the eminently exploitable genres of R&B and rock & roll. By the end of the 1960s, pianist Memphis Slim openly made a point of varying the textures and tempos of his music, noting that many of his friends and contemporaries sometimes slid into ruts of predictability. Comfortably established in Paris during the year 1971, Slim demonstrated his incredible technique and refreshing versatility in a magnificent series of blues and boogie-woogie piano duets with drummer Michel Denis. The entire spectrum of movement is covered here, from slow ruminations to lightning-quick fisticuffs. While there are clearly discernible reverberations from Slim's early idol Roosevelt Sykes, one may also pick up on the influences of Jimmy Yancey and Pete Johnson. The album is entirely instrumental with the possible exception of "Ouargla," named for a city in Saharan East Central Algeria. This track begins with off-mike remarks and a humorous vocal outburst. Beautifully alive with musical portraits of his wife Christina and daughter Nathalie, vibrant with colorful sketches of Parisian nightspots and fancy cars, Memphis Slim's richly rewarding Boogie Woogie album stands with the very best in his entire recorded legacy, and belongs among the greatest achievements ever realized in this genre. ~ arwulf arwulf

Living Blues (pp.64-65) - "Memphis Slim delivers 16 tracks of rollicking piano, sans vocals, which could serve as a lesson in blues and boogie piano." Memphis Slim Boogie Woogie Songs Boogie Woogie Review

Boogie Woogie album
$13.95 BLUES BLUES BLUES was originally meant as a comeback album for Jimmy Rogers, but his untimely death during the recording sessions turned it into an all-star tribute to his legacy.
Jimmy Rogers was very much a musician's musician -- the kind of guitarist that earned accolades from contemporaries and successors alike -- yet one who never wins a wide, mainstream audience. Blues Blues Blues was designed as the album that would find Rogers a larger audience, and as such, it has all the bells and whistles of a big-deal blues album. It has the classics ("Trouble No More," "Bright Lights, Big City," "Sweet Home Chicago," "Don't Start Me to Talkin'"), remakes of Rogers standards ("Ludella," "That's All Right"), cult covers (Muddy Waters' "Blow Wind Blow," which kicks off the album on just the right note) and an astounding number of guest appearances, including cameos from (get ready): Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, Lowell Fulson, Johnnie Johnson, Eric ...
| | Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James CD (1993)
Boogie Woogie CD music
$7.55 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes a representative one-stop compilation difficult, but from "Dust My Broom," James's signature tune and the set's opener, to "Standing at the Crossroads, " the raw 1960 single that brings the disc to a close, THE SKY IS CRYING serves as both a career overview and a greatest-hits collection.
Whether on slow blues (the title track) or boogie-woogie grooves ("Shake ...
| | Little Walter His Best (Chess 50th Anniversary Collection) CD (1997)
Boogie Woogie music CDs
$8.09 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), ...
| | Freddie King Very Best Of Freddy King, Vol. 1 CD (2002)
Boogie Woogie songs
$12.09 The phrase "very best of" in an album title usually indicates a highly selective collection of an artist's career highlights. By that standard, in one sense Collectables Records' The Very Best of Freddy King, Vol. 1 should be called something else; a more accurate description of the contents would be "The Complete Freddy King on Federal Records, Vol. 1." That's because this is the first of three discs that present every recording King made for the King Records subsidiary Federal in chronological order. This disc traces King's Federal stint from his first recording session on August 26, 1960, to the following July. But in another sense, The Very Best of Freddy King is an apt title. King enjoyed all of his singles chart success during 1961, scoring six entries on the R&B charts ...

| | Patrick O'Donnell Limbo CD (2001)
Boogie Woogie songs
$11.19 O'Donnell is a songwriter with a bizarre personal background that includes pizza delivery, law school, a period bumming around Prague, and insurance litigation. Now his resume also includes running his own independent record label, on which he has released albums by the likes of Swell and a Czech band called Uz Jsme Doma, as well as this, his solo debut. It's an interesting piece of art punk retrospection that harks back fairly explicitly to the best part of the 1980s. His singing is relatively tuneless, though not in a bad way -- it goes nicely with the controlled aggression of the guitars, and when he bellows obscure Biblical references ("If I thought it would make her dance for me/I'd put my head on a platter"), the effect is just right. O'Donnell ...
