| | Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James CD (1993)
Boogie Woogie CD music
$7.29 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes a representative one-stop compilation difficult, but from "Dust My Broom," James's signature tune and the set's opener, to "Standing at the Crossroads, " the raw 1960 single that brings the disc to a close, THE SKY IS CRYING serves as both a career overview and a greatest-hits collection.
Whether on slow blues (the title track) or boogie-woogie grooves ("Shake Your Moneymaker"), the slide master's slashing technique and feral tenor voice are on full display. James's slide work is justifiably exalted--though there have been slide players more technically advanced, James's wild, wiry leads have indelibly influenced nearly all blues players that followed him. James's singing, too, is ferocious and marked by extraordinary intensity (he has what can be known in the blues as a "crying" voice). This is electric Chicago blues of the first order, and a finer compilation of this blues-guitar master is difficult ...
| | Little Walter His Best CD (1997)
Boogie Woogie music CDs
$8.09 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica.
With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Fred Below, Walter's ...

| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Boogie Woogie album
$15.65 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" the roaring, bluesy "Joy"). The debt Williams and her band owe to Neil Young & Crazy Horse is ...
| | Bob Dylan Modern Times CD (2006) Deluxe Edition includes bonus DVD
Boogie Woogie CD music
$21.05 Musically, the album finds Dylan once again mining the stately traditionalist sound first heard on LOVE AND THEFT. Lazy blues numbers, piano-based songbook pop, and jumpin' country swing provide the backdrop for Dylan's continuing study of the vicissitudes of life, love, and death. Although he is certainly world-weary, a lot of life is lived in the verses of these songs and there is a dogged spirituality that provides, if not hope (a rather prosaic notion for Dylan by this point, to be sure), at least a means to finding contentment. Finally, a word about Dylan's voice here: while his singing has always been unconventional and never pretty in any traditional sense, in its raspy magnificence it is simply perfect for this timeless music.
Bob Dylan's first new album in five years! His 44th album features 10 new songs and is the third release in an outstanding trilogy along with Time Out Of Mind and Love And Theft. This special edition includes a DVD featuring 4 additional songs and an expanded booklet.
It's arguable that at no point since his 1960s heyday has Bob Dylan been as celebrated as in the decade following his critically acclaimed 1997 album TIME OUT OF MIND. Numerous films, books, and albums--mostly Columbia's impressive archive series of reissues--have been ...

$13.89 where it began is relative, obtuse and somewhat hard to pinpoint with regard to, you know, four guys playing music together - but a start, well that's a horse of a different color and that story always begins with john who married jessica (that's important later) and by the virtue of the way back machine we can see that back in the day when everyone had big hair, brian and john went to school together and played in a smart little combo entertaining the garage walls with pump and thump but then what with distance even though the light may have dimmed, the candle still burned bright so that some time later jessica worked in the same salt mine as billy and they (that is jessica and billy) spoke from time to time about how john played some very dangerous percussion and seeing how billy played keyboards boyhowdie that might be cool - you know,a band and everything..... the idea of which must have been dancing around in jon's melon when one night at a party (which later no one can clearly remember) the chit chat between john and danny turned into what ifs and maybes and everyone went home to sleep intheir own bed with no sugar ...
