Following up his crossover-ridden return from retirement KINGDOM COME, Jay-Z presents a concept album, AMERICAN GANGSTER, inspired by the Ridley Scott movie of the same name. Contentwise, Jay is in his element, spinning street corner imagery and tales of the drug trade in the same spirit as the film, while, on the production end, 1970s R&B and soul samples dominate. The production team of Diddy, LV, and Sean C accounts for much of the record's cohesion, providing six beats built on loops from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and Rudy Love & the Love Family.
Jigga finds plenty room to get jiggy on tracks like "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)," "Party Life," and "I Know," a Neptunes-produced gem that sounds like a tricked-out "It Ain't Hard to Tell." Undoubtedly Jay's tightest effort since 2001's THE BLUEPRINT, AMERICAN GANGSTER features a few choice guest verses from Lil Wayne, Beanie Siegel, and Nas.Rolling Stone (p.191) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] live horns, grooving on some kind of Afro-beat riff over Seventies rumble-in-the-jungle funk..." Rolling Stone (p.108) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007" -- "AMERICAN GANGSTER is tripped out on a Seventies-funk fantasia." Entertainment Weekly (p.103) - "[Jay-Z uses] the film's story and period vibe to color his own elaborate legend....On 'Fallin',' the record's emotional climax, Jay-Z raps frantically as the walls close in." Uncut (p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]ere his favoured old soul classicism -- say, on 'American Dreamin' or 'ROC Boys' -- provides the best backdrop for his rhymes." Q (Magazine) (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "AMERICAN GANGSTER sounds reassuringly expensive, with a hotshot production team including Just Blaze, Pharrell and Diddy's Hitmen crew."

American Gangster Music Review
Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All 63 Reviews WOW First let me say this album is like a movie it has a story like a movie. U start out with the song titled pray which gives u background on y a person chooses 2 hustle it gives u a background story of wat drove him 2 hustling. Then that is followed by the rest of the story u have songs like american dreamin which is the hustler starting out in the game. Hello brooklyn is okay jiggas lyrics are better than wayne who sounds outta place on the beat.no hook is 1 of hovs strong points flow wise an amazing display of lyrical genius. The triumphant roc boys symbolizes financial success and the horns and trumpets add a triumphant feel 2 the song. This is followed by sweet which is a song with a feelin of remorse 4 wat he is doing and how he is getting his money. After this is I know produced by the neptunes a great song with a great feel 2 it. Then party life is the next track and it is exactly wat the title says it is a song about the good life he has finally reached. The song ignorant sh*t is a good song but sticks out like a sore thumb. That is followed by the 2 songs say hello and success feat. Nas. Now these songs mark the beginning of the end 4 the hustler. Say hello is where hov has the attitude of why do u judge me on how i get my money. Success with nas overflows with artistic superioty it seems by this point the hustlers success is now become his own worst enemy. Then the track fallin is the end of the road 4 the hustler and now he relizes that his days of hustlin have now came 2 a cease. The other tracks blue magic which is the neptunes 2nd production on the album is 1 of the best jay songs ever a strong reason is the word play. And the track american gangster is a great bonus track and is an amazing song. Overall this a must have 4 any hip hop fan i highly recommend it. come on look it may have not been his best work, but it still did the job. Its a period piece, and that's what he represented, for the real hip hop fan, J told story after story on this album, for the casual fan he dropped roc boys,to let you know he can still do it. good solid album.
