With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Ronson takes the song back to Wonder's Motown roots, also quoting from Saint Etienne's vibrant update of classic soul production. Torch singing is not only for English speakers. The romance languages (including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Catalan) also offer many possibilities for torch singers, and no one knows that better than Rosa Passos. The Brazilian singer has been performing torchy vocal jazz in Portuguese for many years; some have described her as a Brazilian equivalent of the late Shirley Horn, and that comparison is quite accurate on Romance. Many of the things that Horn was known for -- subtlety, restraint, intimacy, understated introspection -- are easy to find on this excellent release. But while Horn used the English language to get her emotional points across, Passos sticks to Portuguese on Romance -- and anyone who doubts that the Portuguese language can be a superb vehicle for torch singing should pay close attention to Passos' dusky, soulful interpretations of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Por Causa de Você," "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar"), Djavan ("Alibi"), Ivan Lins ("Doce Presenca"), Joao Donato ("Cadê Você") and other well-known Brazilian songwriters. Sim is Vanessa da Mata's third album and the first after the huge commercial success of Essa Boneca Tem Manual, from 2004. If Essa Boneca Tem Manual was a blatant, although undeniably very successful, appeal to pure commercialism and the radio hit lists, Sim is a firm step back towards a more intellectual approach to Brazilian pop music. Liminha, who produced the last album, has been substituted by the hip and hyped production duo Kassin and Mario Caldato. As usual when Kassin is involved, the result is an excellent and very fresh sounding production which manages to give a very modern impression without appearing fake or overproduced. Sim was partly recorded in Jamaica, and reggae is indeed one of the primary themes of the album. "Vermelho," "Ilegais," and "Absurdo" are all pure reggae songs. And as a bonus, Sly & Robbie, one of Jamaica's most acclaimed and prolific producer teams, contribute on five tracks. A less welcome guest appearance is that of Ben Harper, who lends his voice and English lyrics to "Boa Sorte/Good Luck." The purpose of Harper's presence is undoubtedly to keep the attention of the mainstream teenage crowd, who first discovered da Mata through the success of Essa Boneca Tem Manual. It has to be said, though, that in spite of Harper, "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" is actually a quite nice song. "Baú" with its imposing and danceable Afro-beat is one of the real highlights of the album.
