Horse Soldier Horse Soldier
$18.99 By Graham RockinghamThe Hamilton SpectatorThe good folks at Hamilton's Grant Avenue Studios seem to be getting out more these days. When business is good, and they say it is, it's fairly easy to stay cooped up in the studio all day long, taking care of everybody else's music. It's not a bad place to hang out. There's all that history hanging on the walls -- pictures of people such as Bono, Eno and Daniel Lanois at the console, plus a whole array of records, Martha and the Muffins, Parachute Club, a couple by Gordon Lightfoot. It's easy to forget that the Grant Avenue denizens are top-flight musicians as well as studio geeks. But they are.Take J.P. Riemens. He has been a co-owner of Grant for seven years. The first three or four, he spent just learning how to use all the gear. Since then, he has returned to his first love, songwriting."I have to write," Riemens says. "I have to get out and play."Plain And Simple is a return to his roots, growing up in the tobacco belt on an acre of land outside a little town called Harley. People tend to be natural storytellers there and, let's face it, there's not much else to do in winter except play guitar. They get good at it.The album has the feel of a country kitchen and the near-perfect sound of Grant Avenue. Riemens wrote all 13 tracks, most of them recently, although one, Loser, goes back 30 years to his youth growing up near the shores of Lake Erie, a time when Riemens spent his summers hanging tobacco, baling hay and getting into mischief. In fact, most of the songs have that by-the-shores-of-Lake Erie setting. Farming Town is a lament for the loss of old ways. Dover Girl revisits late night kisses on the beach outside the old Summer Garden dance hall.A Piece Of Heaven is a standard '70s story about heading out West in search of hippie paradise. Riemens lived the dream, spending three years on the road as a street singer, hitching rides, crashing with friends and playing the streets of Winnipeg, Vancouver and Sault Ste. Marie.Get Up And Dance could have been written for a jubilee in a country arena. On Glory Daze, Riemens sings about all those stories he has heard from musicians boasting of past ...

Horse Soldier Horse Soldier
$12.65 BIOGRAPHYRON MASONI was born in a little white weather boarded house on Leesville Road in Campbell County, Virginia on the seventeenth day of November 1943. I am a saw miller's son. I grew up in the country and I am proud to say that I like to think of myself as a country gentleman. I graduated from Brookville High School, and later earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from the School of Business at Lynchburg College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. While at college I took music appreciation where I was exposed to the works of the classical masters such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and many others. This greatly enhanced my love and appreciation for music. I now enjoy listening to all types of music. However, I am of the opinion that for myself I enjoy listening to soft pleasing melodies with their many variations, as opposed to unmelodic ones we sometimes hear today.I was only seven years old when I first heard "Chet Atkins" play the guitar. Immediately I fell in love with the music and the guitar. I remember thinking to myself how could it be that only one man and one guitar could make the musical sounds of a whole orchestra? From that moment on I have sought to play and enjoy the "Chet Atkins" style of guitar. When I was about ten years old my uncle nicknamed me "Little Chet." I suppose it was because I was trying so hard to learn the style of play. My parents were going insane from hearing me practicing hour after hour day after day. It didn't take long for our whole community to learn what I was trying to do. Many thought it was hopeless and many times I thought so too. Over the years instead of trying to play songs of others, I have sought to create my own melodies and lyrics. Because of my earlier conditioning of attempting to play the "Atkins" ...
| | Phil Sampson Little Pieces Of His Heart CD (1999)
Horse Soldier Horse Soldier
$15.95 Phil Sampson is arguably one of Oklahoma's finest singer songwriters. Phil grew up in the Chickasha area before settling in Lawton after college with his wife Susan. In the late '60s he played the folk coffee house circuit from Lawton to Weatherford and other college towns. In 1971 Phil went to California with a notebook full of songs to visit his old friend Rudy Ramos. Rudy was playing the character of "Wind" in the TV show "High Chaparral." Rudy also recorded a rock album "Hard Knocks and Bad Times" that featured six of Phil's songs. Shortly after the album's less then spectacular release in June of 1972 Phil returned to Oklahoma to begin again.Phil soon started playing at a new bar in Medicine Park run by a few recently discharged Vietnam Vets called the "Prancing Pony." Out of this hole in the wall came the great band, the "Medicine Park All Boy Derelict Band" and many of Phil's great songs. This band consisted of : Phil on vocals and rhythm guitar, Mark Paden on vocals and lead guitar, Bill Russell on vocals, auto harp, and guitar, Steve Grunder on vocals and bass, Mike McCarty on vocals and drums, and rounding out with Lewis "Rug" Eckert on blues harp, vocals, comedy and general mayhem! This band with some substitutions played through most of the 1970s, appearing occasionally as Boswell and the Bush Pilots (Grunder and McCarty left to play with Blue Rose Cafe from 1975-'77). In 1981 while Mark Paden was in Nashville writing and trying to promote his own songs he ended up getting Phil his biggest break by including one of Phil's songs, "I Loved Them Everyone," on the tale end of one of Mark's demo tapes. This song became a multimillion seller for country star, T. G. Shepard. Now the rest of the ...
