| | Pretty Ricky Bluestars CD (2005)
Best Of 2pac Part 1: Thug CD music
$10.15 "Get You Right," a smooth throwback ballad from Miami outfit Pretty Ricky's debut, BLUESTARS, features a hardcore rap that name-checks 1990s groups H-Town and Jodeci. While the four youthful brothers of Pretty Ricky were likely in grade school when these artists had their hits, it's a fitting reference; the quartet's sound reveals an innate feel for the New Jack Swing sound of that time. This approach is evident in both the record's production and its raw sensuality, and the overall vibe is updated with a Dirty South sensibility.
Pretty Ricky features three rappers--Slick, Spectacular, and Diamond--augmented by the resonant voice of Pleasure, whose alluring style falls somewhere between Stevie Wonder and R. Kelly. The subject matter of BLUESTARS tends toward that of the latter (but often hints at the depth ...
| | R Kelly TP.3: Reloaded CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition
Best Of 2pac Part 1: Thug music CDs
$8.99 The rest of the album provides thirteen tracks of Kelly's typically strong and sensual modern R&B. He starts off the record with a reminder that he's far from a one-note artist, coming on as hard as anyone with the anthemic single "Playa's Club," then rolls into a 1970s groove with help from the always-spectacular Snoop Dogg on "Happy Summertime," before easing into a set of slow jams highlighted by the lusty "In the Kitchen" and the breezy "Slow Wind." As much as R. Kelly can't seem to stop getting himself into trouble, he also can't stop releasing original, arousing albums. TP.3 is no exception.

| | Kanye West Graduation CD (2007)
Best Of 2pac Part 1: Thug album
$10.99 Given the remarkable critical and commercial success of 2005's LATE REGISTRATION, Kanye West's rich, rewarding sophomore release, expectations were high for 2007's GRADUATION. Ever savvy, West flouts those expectations by delivering a record that delivers curveballs while staying true to his sharply sculpted, commercially minded m.o. West's rapping, never his greatest strength, is still entertaining. He delivers witty, smart, sometimes absurd rhymes (he seems to take more lyrical chances on GRADUATION) that fit nicely with the overall feel of his tracks.
As usual, it's West's productions that stand out. While there are examples of his style-defining use of classic R&B samples and background choirs (as on the feel-good highlight "I Wonder"), West streamlines his sound to center on synth-driven lines, giving many of the tracks a ...
