The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view of the creation of Metallica's 2003 album, ST. Probably Graham Nash's most famous solo album--he never recorded as many solo projects as his CSN&Y cohorts, for some reason--1971's SONGS FOR BEGINNERS is the quintessential Graham Nash experience. The ex-Hollies frontman overdubs his distinctive harmonies over unfailingly pretty piano and guitar melodies, letting his pop instincts, which were always more finely attuned than those of his folkier chums, lead him.
Part protest songs--"Military Madness" and "Chicago" are as impassioned as Young's "Ohio"--and part singer-songwriter introspection, the songs are a uniformly strong lot. "Wounded Bird" and "Simple Man," among Nash's most beloved tunes, are highlights, but the lovely "Sleep Song" is among Nash's finest tunes ever. ELIMINATOR, with its churning guitars and synthesizer hooks, was on the album charts for over a year, and had hits with "Sharp Dressed Man," "Gimme All Your Lovin'" and "Legs." The album and its accompanying videos were ubiquitous in 1983, on television ZZ Top was seen on MTV, "St. Elsewhere," even on the Tonight show.
1983 was the year Z.Z. Top went from being everyone's favourite bar-room boogie band to international superstars. Graced with mind-boggling and incredibly photogenic beards, a very neat trilogy of sexy videos and a collective ear for a quite distinct and highly stylized, if somewhat grizzled blues/pop, the sudden enormity of their success seems in retrospect like no real surprise. MTV had never quite seen the like and the attention given to the excellent 'Gimme All Your Lovin" single was quickly repeated for both 'Sharp-Dressed Man' and the quite irreverent 'Legs'. It still sounds fresh, innovative and fun today. in the wake of many imitators.

In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop.
The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave.
