(1 Customer Review)
Rufus Wainwright has never been afraid of the extravagant gesture, so in the summer of 2006, the singer-songwriter booked a special engagement at Carnegie Hall, complete with a full orchestra and special guests, for the express purpose of recreating Judy Garland's iconic 1961 comeback album, JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL, in its entirety. Although in both graphic design and Wainwright's choice of outfits for the concert (as seen on the DVD RUFUS! RUFUS! RUFUS! DOES JUDY! JUDY! JUDY!, available separately), care was taken to evoke the overall look and feel of Garland's original concert, Wainwright smartly avoids trying to sound like Garland. Still, his semi-operatic vocal style is a perfect vehicle for these classic pre-rock Tin Pan Alley and Broadway songs. Guests include sister Martha Wainwright, mother Kate McGarrigle, and on a lovely version of "After You've Gone," Garland's youngest daughter Lorna Luft.
Personnel: Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Vincent Della Rocca (saxophone); John Oddo (piano); Richard Sarpola (bass guitar); James Saporito (drums).
Additional personnel: Kate McGarrigle, Lorna Luft, Martha Wainwright.
Rolling Stone (p.132) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a relief to hear him essay the show tunes and Tin Pan Alley chestnuts of this tribute album..." Entertainment Weekly (p.131) - "His delicate upper range is nicely attuned to some of the ballads..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The material is cabaret deluxe....The emotions go deeper than if it had been a mere vanity project..." Harp (magazine) (p.94) - "[H]is muscular voice and sharp performance skills pull off a moving tribute to what was considered Garland's finest performance." The Word (magazine) (p.105) - "He proves himself the best kind of fan: witty, erudite, affectionate and exacting..." Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized ...

| | Rufus Wainwright Want One CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall
$10.99 After his sophomore album, POSES, sailed critically but failed commercially, Rufus Wainwright fell into a pattern of hard drug abuse. Luckily, the support of friends and family landed him in rehab. Emerging newly sober and clearheaded, Rufus threw himself into his work. The result is WANT ONE, an unabashedly honest, musically sprawling record that finds the vocalist reaching a new level of maturity.
It becomes quite clear during the borderline satirical album opener "Oh, What a World" (which goes so far as to reference Ravel's "Bolero") that Wainwright has met his musical match in producer Marius de Vries (U2, Bjork). Rather than reigning in the singer/multi-instrumentalist's ...

Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall
$15.15 The B Sexuals formed in Sacramento, CA late in 2003. They consist of just two members: Phil Goodwin and Mike Conroy. Using a minimalist approach, they rely on an acoustic guitar and two drums to compete with the sound of a full band. The plan usually succeeds. Sometimes it tries really hard. "They accomplish so much considering how little is going on up on the stage. (Rant Magazine 7.04) As far as cities go Sacramento's a small place, but ...
