The best and most interesting jungle or drum'n'bass music has always been the kind that draws deepest on the music's reggae roots; the juxtaposition of languid, smoky basslines and frenetic double-speed breakbeats has always packed a special wallop, more so than the chillier, all-digital variety. The two volumes in the Greensleeves label's two-disc Ragga Jungle Anthems series offers a case in point. Although it would have been nice to have some roots reggae artists scattered in among the rockstone deejays and loverman dancehall crooners, and although most of the tracks on this first volume run far too long (about five minutes, on average), this collection does a good job of presenting the state of the art in ragamuffin junglism. Chakademus and Pliers have never sounded more confident and powerful than they do in this jungle setting of "Gal Wine" (mixed by Ridley Don), and there are exceptionally fine remixes of Dawn Penn's classic "No No No" and Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi," as well. Bounty Killer shows up on almost half the tracks, which is a few too many, but he's a good choice for this kind of restlessly energetic material. Only the pedestrian slackness of Admiral Bailey's "Jungle Punanny" really disappoints. Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Gregory Isaacs Private Beach Party CD (1985)
Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 music CDs
$12.25 Although it was 1988's Red Rose for Gregory that really fired the imagination of international audiences, Private Beach Party, unleashed three years earlier, was immensely popular in its day, and drove reggae fans worldwide to distraction. Both sets were produced by Gussie Clarke, and boasted some of his most sizzling rhythms.
In 1985, ragga was beginning to steamroll across the Jamaican dancehalls, but Party still has a wonderfully organic quality, even though it's aimed straight at the sound systems. The musicianship is superb, with Sly Dunbar, Willie Stewart, Lloyd Parks, and Robbie Shakespeare laying down the sizzling rhythms, while guitarist Willie Lindo, pianists/synth players Franklin Waul and Robbie Lyn build up the melodies and moods, and the superb brass section of Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson, Chico Chin and Dave Madden take the songs to new heights.
And what glorious heights they are. Clarke has the wizard's touch, and can take even a sweet and intimate number like the title track or a bubbly love song like "Special to Me" and conjure up plenty of dancehall fire. And no matter if Isaacs himself is in "Bits and Pieces" after his lover leaves, the ...

| | Culture Two Sevens Clash CD (1978) Deluxe Edition
Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 CD music
$14.99 One of the masterpieces of the roots era, no album better defines its time and place than Two Sevens Clash, which encompasses both the religious fervor of its day and the rich sounds of contemporary Jamaica. Avowed Rastafarians, Culture had formed in 1976, and cut two singles before beginning work on their debut album with producers the Mighty Two (aka Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson). Their second single, "Two Sevens Clash," would title the album and provide its focal point. The song swept across the island like a wildfire, its power fed by the apocalyptic fever that held the island in its clutches throughout late 1976 and into 1977. (Rastafarians believed the apocalypse would begin when the two sevens clashed, with July 7, 1977, when the four sevens clashed, the most fearsome date of concern.) However, the song itself was fearless, celebrating the impending ...
