| | Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 Vinyl LP Record - Import
The best and most interesting jungle or drum'n'bass music has always been the kind that draws deepest on the music's reggae roots; the juxtaposition of languid, smoky basslines and frenetic double-speed breakbeats has always packed a special wallop, more so than the chillier, all-digital variety. The two volumes in the Greensleeves label's two-disc Ragga Jungle Anthems series offers a case in point. Although it would have been nice to have some roots reggae artists scattered in among the rockstone deejays and loverman dancehall crooners, and although most of the tracks on this first volume run far too long (about five minutes, on average), this collection does a good job of presenting the state of the art in ragamuffin junglism. Chakademus and Pliers have never sounded more confident and powerful than they do in this jungle setting of "Gal Wine" (mixed by Ridley Don), and there are exceptionally fine remixes of Dawn Penn's classic "No No No" and Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi," as well. Bounty Killer shows up on almost half the tracks, which is a few too many, but he's a good choice for this kind of restlessly energetic material. Only the pedestrian slackness of Admiral Bailey's "Jungle Punanny" really disappoints. Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson

Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 album
$14.69 One of the masterpieces of the roots era, no album better defines its time and place than Two Sevens Clash, which encompasses both the religious fervor of its day and the rich sounds of contemporary Jamaica. Avowed Rastafarians, Culture had formed in 1976, and cut two singles before beginning work on their debut album with producers the Mighty Two (aka Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson). Their second single, "Two Sevens Clash," would title the album and provide its focal point. ...

Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 music CDs

With one foot planted firmly in Jamaica's tradition of classic toasting (his precursors include U-Roy and Yellowman), and the other in the burgeoning world of American hip hop, Shabba Ranks purveyed a hard-hitting ragga-rap style that came to typify the form known as dancehall. Delivered over deep, bass-thick production, Ranks' provocative, rhythmically infectious delivery struck an international chord. The artist's particularly successful tenure at Epic Records in the early-to-mid-1990s is represented on GREATEST HITS, an impressive ...

| | Bedouin Soundclash Sounding A Mosaic CD (2004)
Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 album
$9.75 To call Bedouin Soundclash a reggae band would be a gross over-simplification. Their spare guitar-bass-drums lineup gives their music a dry texture that recalls the early Cure, while singer Jay Malinowski's raspy wail sounds, at times, like a cross between Bob Marley and Paul Simon. The band's name is probably intended as a tribute to reggae experimentalist Badawi, who released an album of the same name ...

Ragga Jungle Anthems, Vol. 1 music CDs
$15.39 Jason Collett took a break from Broken Social Scene in 2005, choosing instead to focus on the promotion of Idols of Exile alongside his backing band, Paso Mino. Here's to Being Here arrives three years later, featuring a slimmed-down lineup (only Paso Mino and a small handful of guests lend their help) and an emphasis on dusty, '70s AM radio songcraft. Bob Dylan's raspy vocals and slow annunciations are an obvious influence here, but Collett's willingness to mix straightforward Americana with genre-bending experiments is more akin to a pre-Subtitulo Josh Rouse. These 12 songs are lightly embellished with pianos, handheld percussion, harmonicas, and multiple guitars, resulting in an organic mix that sounds worlds apart from the ...
