| | David Finck Quartet Future Day CD David Finck Quartet Discography of CDs
One of today’s most versatile and in-demand bassists, David Finck has developed into an impressive composer, arranger, and producer. Future Day (Soundbrush Records), his debut CD as a leader, is a superb 12-song set including compositions by Wayne Shorter (“Black Eyes”), Cedar Walton (“Firm Roots”), Joe Locke (“Appointment in Orvieto”), and the leader himself. Finck's a chameleon of sorts, but his core qualities never change: a rich, woodsy tone; flawless intonation and time; and an elegant delivery that never wastes a note. He solos with imagination and phrases as tastefully as the best singers he accompanies. Joined here by three of the most respected names in jazz - vibraphonist Joe Locke, and Joe La Barbera (known as a member of Bill Evans’s last trio (he played with Evans from 1978-1980.“I have worked with David Finck in many different circumstances and venues, over a period of eight years, and in my opinion, there is no one who is as good a bassist and collaborator.” Andre PrevinWhat The Press Is Saying About Future Day:Bassist David Finck’s first-call session status in jazz and pop circles amid a long-running stint with pianist/composer Andre Previn equates to a busy and rather storied career. With his debut effort as a leader, the artist shines radiantly, which is a facet that also applies to the crystalline sonic characteristics of this buoyant program. - Glenn Astarita JazzReview.com Despite his having appeared on hundreds of recordings, Future Day (Soundbrush – 1012) is the first album from bassist DAVID FINCK as a leader. One listen, and you wonder why it has taken so long for him to assume the leader’s mantle. Fronting a quartet that also includes Joe Locke on vibes, Tom Ranier on piano and Joe La Barbera on drums, Finck has created a superb collection of straight-ahead jazz that will appeal to a wide audience of jazz enthusiasts. - Joe Lang Jersey JazzIn all this is an album where the musicianship, excellent charts and a superb cast of players combine to make this disc one of the finest new releases of the year. An impressive debut for bassist David Finck and his quartet. - Edward Blanco EjazzNews.comWhen David Finck's bass is heard along with the drums that start "I Know" on the opening track to Future Day soundbrush), one can't help but smile and have a sense (a personal "I Know...") that this is the start of musical greatness. - John Book therunoffgroove.blogspot.com“When the bass has the sound of authority, when it is a testament to time, when it has a certain wisdom in its tone…you’ll see this all belongs to David Finck. He makes the bass sing and swing.” Alan Bergman BIO:David Finck is a jazz bassist, but to call him that hardly does justice to an artist who plays authentically in more musical languages than almost anyone in his field. His resume suggests how widely prized he is. Finck is Andre Previn’s bassist of choice; he also worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock. He’s accompanied Broadway belters like Linda Eder, pop stars (George Michael, Gladys Knight, Rod Stewart, Natalie Cole), jazz singers (Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan, Karrin Allyson), and legends of the Great American Songbook (Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett). He played Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” behind Aretha Franklin on David Letterman. And when it comes to Latin and Brazilian music, no American bassist is as trusted by so many of the masters, among them Paquito D’Rivera, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Ivan Lins, and Leny Andrade.
The David Finck Quartet: Tom Ranier (piano); Joe Locke (vibraphone); David Finck (bass guitar); Joe LaBarbera (drums).
Additional personnel: Bob Sheppard (tenor saxophone); Jeremy Pelt (trumpet).
JazzTimes (p.100) - "Finck's engaging jazz waltz 'New Valley' is a breezy number right out of the Vince Guaraldi book while the quartet's inventive 5/4 take on 'Nature Boy' puts a new spin on that haunting classic ballad." David Finck Quartet Future Day Songs Future Day Review
