| | Boz Scaggs Speak Low CD (2008)
Satsch CD music
$13.14 From his late 1960s days as the lead singer of the Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs has always had an undercurrent of jazz influence in his phrasing. Therefore, SPEAK LOW should come as no surprise to longtime fans. No mere raid on the Great American Songbook in the manner of Rod Stewart's adult contemporary albums, SPEAK LOW is a personal, canny follow-up to 2003's collection of standards, BUT BEAUTIFUL. These 12 tracks offer less familiar tracks like Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and Chet Baker's "She Was Too Good To Me," given abstract, cerebral arrangements in the manner of 1950s Gil Evans charts.
Programmer: Steve Rodby.
Audio Mixers: Danny Kopelson; Michael Rodriguez .
Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig.
Recording information: Skywalker Sound, Nicasio Ca.
Arranger: Gil Goldstein.
Personnel: Boz Scaggs (vocals, guitar); Carol Robbins (harp); Joyce Hammann, Laura Seaton (violin); ...
| | Coldplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends CD (2008)
Satsch music CDs
$14.79 On 2008's VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS, Coldplay follows up X&Y's accessible anthems by tweaking its signature Britpop sound with the aid of renowned producer Brian Eno, celebrated not only for his own innovative ambient albums, but also for his behind-the-boards work with U2. Eno's contributions don't result in a ZOOROPA-like foray into dance-pop, however--VIVA LA VIDA sticks with Coldplay's knack for mid-tempo majesty, but expands these tracks with studio bells and whistles that pull the group out of its stadium-ready comfort zone.
Though the pulsing instrumental opener, "Life in Technicolor," might make listeners think that they're accidentally playing the latest M83 album, VIVA asserts itself as a Coldplay outing with "Cemeteries of London," a dreamy tune that finds Martin singing in a comfortable middle register. Still, the group's quest for a different sound is exemplified ...

| Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 4 Way Street CDs (1971) Jewel Box
Satsch CD music
$19.29 4 WAY STREET caught Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their 1970 concert tour at the height of their success. Even with its included bits of audience patter and a few overlong tracks ("Southern Man" and "Carry On"), the album is varied and exciting, and perfectly captures the quartet's remarkable singer/songwriter chemistry and sparkling harmonies. Stephen Still's classics like "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Love the One You're With" abut David Crosby tunes like the beautiful "Laughing" and Graham Nash's positive, instructional "Teach Your Children."
But the real treat of 4 WAY STREET is the inclusion of Neil Young's solo material, including "Cowgirl In the Sand" from Young's first solo album, and the riveting "Ohio," about the Kent State student massacre. (The CD reissue also includes the Young medley "The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down By The River.") By the time the album came out, however, Young had already left the group, and Crosby, Stills & Nash began to work on solo and duo projects. 4 WAY STREET captures the end of an era, then, and remains an essential part of any folk and singer/songwriter collection.

Satsch CD music
$15.39 Grammy winner Taylor Dayne turns in another satisfying collection of R&B-inflected pop with SATISFIED. The lead-off single, "Beautiful," for example, is a sweet, soaring tune with a radio-ready melody and a danceable beat, and its vibe, addictive as sugar, carries throughout the album. Dayne also delivers her individual spin on a couple of covers: Des'ree's "Kissing You" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge." Fans of the singer will find her as fabulous as ever here, and will almost certainly come away feeling SATISFIED themselves.
Personnel: Taylor Dayne (vocals, background vocals); John McCurry (guitar, bass guitar); Al Nilo, Brent Paschke, Kevin Hanson (guitar); Peter Wade (guitars, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Justin Rothberg (guitars); Rick Nowels (acoustic guitar, keyboards); Dean Reid, Rusty Anderson (electric guitar); Wells Cunningham (cello); Julio Reyes Copello (piano); John Hill (keyboards, synthesizer, ...
