Goin' Crazy album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, delivering more of the same of what she did in her moment in the sun on television. Those won over by Boyle, either her voice or story, will surely be satisfied. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
There's no question that Susan Boyle's story is inspiring, but the same adjective can't quite apply to her debut, I Dreamed a Dream. This is almost a willful antonym of "inspiring" -- it is not stirring, rousing, or stimulating, it is sleepy, reserved, and placid, but is that ...
| | Glee The Music 1 Glee: The Music, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Original Soundtrack
Goin' Crazy CD music
$11.29 Like the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, GLEE became more than a TV show when several of its songs cracked the Hot 100, including the number four hit "Don't Stop Believing." That song kicks off this soundtrack, the first in a series of albums cataloging the music performed by the show's cast. Not all GLEE members are created equal--some cast mates are far better actors than singers--but this soundtrack has enough star power to keep things trucking along, especially when powerhouse alto Lea Michele takes the wheel. She sounds fantastic throughout, whether she's holding her own during a duet with Broadway queen Kristen Chenoweth or covering the likes of Jordin Sparks, Avril Lavigne, and Queen. The soundtrack is mostly a vehicle for her voice, yet it also gives ample stage time to Matthew Morrison, who downplays his own Broadway ...

| | Allison Iraheta Just Like You CD (2009)
Goin' Crazy album
$11.15 The spunky kid sister to Kris Allen and Adam Lambert on season eight of American Idol, Allison Iraheta was the bridge between Allen's sweet, sincere balladeering and Lambert's arch camp. She still had some of Adam's spice but could be packaged like Kris, not unlike her clear forebear Kelly Clarkson, who proved that sass could be bottled and sold. Just Like You is cut from the same cloth as Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" mode, all walls of guitars and huge Max Martin-styled hooks, some of which are indeed written by Martin himself, including the album's standout, "Friday I'll Be Over U." When things slow down, Iraheta drifts into P!nk mode, assisted by the singer/songwriter herself on "No One Else" but not on the bluesy ballad "Scars," which is otherwise a dead ringer for P!nk. Allison may strongly resemble her idols here, but chalk that up to youth and it doesn't prevent her from conveying considerable charisma. Unlike many Idol-raised divas, Allison Iraheta has a persona, singing with force and personality, coming alive with the right songs -- those Martin tunes, "Friday I'll Be Over U" and "Just Like You," "Don't Waste the Pretty," and fellow reality show contestant Dilana's "Holiday." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Gordon Lightfoot Complete Greatest Hits CD (2002)
Goin' Crazy CD music
$10.09 Digitally remastered by Andrew Garver, Dan Hersch, and Bill Inglot.
He may be remembered by the unenlightened as a purveyor of mellow '70s AM radio hits, but Gordon Lightfoot is as fine a singer-songwriter as Canada has ever produced (no small accomplishment, considering the company), feted by no less than Bob Dylan himself. COMPLETE GREATEST HITS is as definitive a Lightfoot collection as you can get onto a single disc, and it bears out the aforementioned facts handsomely. "Early Morning ...

| | Cheer-Accident Introducing Lemon Vinyl LP (2003) Bonus CD
Goin' Crazy album
$18.69 Cheer-Accident is a band overflowing with chops and ideas, but not always the type of focus or good taste needed to put them to best use. Like most of their other work, Introducing Lemon has moments that are brilliant and others that are aimless and annoying. The centerpiece here is the 20-plus-minute opener, "The Autumn Wind Is a Pirate," a long instrumental voyage that alternates between Zappa-like prog acrobatics, a mellow middle section with melodica and acoustic slide guitar, and, out of nowhere, a tight funky part at the end with a gorgeous, trombone-heavy horn arrangement. However, the next song, "Camp o' Physique," is rendered unlistenable by overbearingly jokey vocals, as is the fourth song, "Track 29." On the plus side, "Smile" is a flawless, relaxed pop song that is easily the album's highlight, not just because it's catchy and lyrically moving, but because it has a directness and a sense of tasteful restraint that's often missing elsewhere here. "Find" hits on some of the same jazzy pop cylinders amid its lengthier instrumental passages, which include a long, looping "fade-out" before the song surprisingly picks up again at about the 15-minute mark. Ultimately, of this disc's 70-plus minutes, only about half of it is genuinely entertaining, the rest coming off as either meandering or else downright annoying. Cheer-Accident have a great album in them; they just need to job a better job of editing their ideas. ~ William York
