A couple of my friends asked me why Shabdalayam (and me) wanted to make this Album at a point when digital distribution and the prospect of illegal downloads is hovering in every distributor's mind. To all of us at Shabdalayam, including Sri Krishna, "Antha Sai" is our tribute to our spiritual father (baba) and guru - Shiridi Sai Baba, who taught us how to focus, to persevere, to remain effective and to never ever give up on looking inward. One of the greatest Sufi Saints to ever walk the face of the earth, Sai baba, helped his followers understand that there are grey levels between complete consciousness and death and that a true spiritual journey involves abnegation of attachment to any popular religion or faith, simply because each individual is different from the other. He was probably one of those rare gems that could not be classified to this date as either a Hindu or a muslim. He is a miracle of his own right and his life story is a living testament to his beliefs. Few people would believe, in years, that such a man even walked of the face of this earth. Sai baba, as a Guru, remained in his rags and begged on the streets and cooked for people in his Masjid and, at no point, could be doubted for his unique journey of understanding and delivering spiritual wisdom to people of all walks and faiths of humanity. To me, this album remains special not just because I would love to continue to promote new and upcoming artists like Sri Krishna, Nitya, Hema Chandra and Varada Raju but also because I believe in the spirit of Baba's teachings of religious 'in'tolerance, of finding the true purpose of our spirit as felt from deep within and of Shradha (Faith, Focus, Devotion) and Saburi (Patience). Antha Sai
$11.29 CCM outfit MercyMe had four albums to their credit before releasing 2006's COMING UP TO BREATHE. While the effort boasts the group's usual blend of pop-rock structures, accessible melodies, and faith-based lyrics, COMING UP TO BREATHE finds MercyMe refining their craft to offer up some of the best songwriting and playing of their career. The driving, soaring title track opens the album with an effective punch, and also establishes singer Bart Millard's lyrical stance of seeking Jesus Christ in times of trouble, a theme repeated often throughout the album. But if MercyMe delve deeper into rock territory on this album, they sacrifice none of their penchant for pop hooks (as on the immediately catchy "So Long Self") or expansive, inspirational choruses (as on the lilting "Something About You"). Naturally, messages of Christian praise and worship are central to the music, making COMING UP TO BREATHE a winner for all CCM fans. There's a reason MercyMe is the hottest act in Christian music. The band has written hit after hit, time after time. With their latest opus Coming Up to Breathe there appears to be more coming. In a concerted effort to revert back to the days when they were more a rock band and less of a hitmaking machine, MercyMe delivers. While it's certainly not heavy metal, the songs definitely keep driving forward. Guitars are more prominent and production leans on a more earthy formula. "No More No Less" is a perfect example of straightforward rock meeting MercyMe; it isn't brain surgery but it is rock & roll and it's done well. The half-time breakdown at the song's conclusion takes it to a whole different level. The background vocals literally sound like the Temptations and are some of the best heard yet this year. One area MercyMe will never ignore is in the lyric department. Vocalist Bart Millard delivers some of the most poignant and heartfelt thoughts on Coming Up to Breathe. He and band take the cut "Bring the Rain" and weave it into praise & worship splendor while lyrically telling a relevant story. "Last One Standing" turns up the rock. There's a musical breakdown that could easily be the Foo Fighters when the vocals re-enter the distorted mix and set the tune off. "Hold Fast" is rock with polish and Nathan Cochran's bass groove not only sounds heavy but its very tone exudes sweat. The mid-song bridge shows the band at their pinnacle when the guitars build to Millard's intense vocals. "One Trick Pony" is one of the most diverse cuts, sounding like it's being played from the front porch in ...

Antha Sai
$18.05 Any reasonable music fan would be forgiven for being wary of a collection of American folk music whose executive producer was former attorney general Janet Reno, but as it happens Reno knows more about such things than one might expect. At the very least Reno had the good judgment to suggest singer, songwriter and activist Ed Pettersen coordinate an album of songs that reflected different aspects of American history, from the colonial period to the present day. Pettersen's long gestating project, Song of America, has finally surfaced as a hefty three-CD set, featuring 50 songs from as many artists, and the final product is frequently fascinating and ambitious stuff, music that demonstrates how art mirrors our history and how that art can carry its message in a broad range of interpretations. Pettersen, co-producers David Macias and Bob Olhsson, and their cast of singers and musicians ...
