Come Into My House album
$11.16 DEAR SCIENCE is distinguished overall by more danceable rhythms, as on the funky parable "Golden Age" and the driving "Red Dress" (which features members of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra). Prince and Fela Kuti may be exerting more of an influence, but TVOTR still haven't relinquished their devotion to Brian Eno and Joy Division: dark corners and layered ambient dimensions give these songs an endless, labyrinthine feel. A stunning achievement, DEAR SCIENCE is one of the year's best albums, and is also a blueprint for the future of rock music.
Somewhere between highbrow art rock and the more familiar, accessible sounds of indie and post-punk, TV On the Radio had already positioned themselves, over the course of their first two albums, as one of the better bands of the early 21st century. DEAR SCIENCE, the group's third disc, is a quantum leap forward as it refines the swirling experimentalism of its predecessor, RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN, and applies it to a batch of songs that are hook-filled and inspired.

| | Calexico Carried To Dust CD (2008)
Come Into My House CD music
$13.25 After 2006's GARDEN RUIN, which downplayed the last half of Calexico's portmanteau name considerably in favor of an alt-folk sound much more in line with their occasional collaborators, Iron and Wine, CARRIED TO DUST is a strong return to the classic Calexico sound. Joey Burns and John Convertino infuse their largely acoustic indie rock songs with Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti western climaxes, mariachi horns, flamenco guitars, and other evocative sounds of the American Southwest. One difference is a newfound political sensitivity, best heard on the powerful opener, "Victor Jara's Hands," in honor of the Chilean poet and political activist tortured and murdered by henchmen of his country's brutal military junta in 1973. Another highlight is "El Gatillo (Trigger Revisited)," a complete ...
| | Mogwai Hawk Is Howling CDs (2008) With DVD; Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Come Into My House music CDs
$15.18 On 2008's THE HAWK IS HOWLING, Mogwai simultaneously returns to late-1990s form and showcases the best of its post-millennial innovations, easily making it one of the Scottish art-rock ensemble's most dynamic outings. Reuniting with producer Andy Miller, who worked on the group's formative TEN RAPID compilation ('97), Mogwai manages to recapture some of the immediacy of those recordings, while still drifting into its gentle latter-day melodicism on certain tracks.
HAWK's most stunning song is "Batcat," a crushingly heavy number that makes Black Sabbath's "Supernaut" looks positively poppy, with Mogwai's trio of six-stringers unleashing snarling guitar lines of pure dread. "The Sun Smells Too Loud" inhabits the other end of the band's sonic spectrum, offering up shimmering atmospherics that could effectively accompany solar orbit. While these two tunes alone are worth the price of admission, THE HAWK IS HOWLING is filled out with intriguing instrumental moments that fall somewhere in between ...

| | Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon CD (1973)
Come Into My House album
$14.79 DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for THE BODY, a surreal medical documentary.
Floyd and their long-time engineer, Alan Parsons, used a multitude of sound effects--from stereophonically projected footsteps and planes flying overhead ("On the Run") to a roomful of ringing clocks ("Time"). Further adding to the record's mystique, barely audible spoken passages were sprinkled throughout--a result of hours interviewing random Abbey Road occupants about their views on insanity, violence, and death. Floyd must have struck a nerve: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON remained on Billboard's albums chart for an astounding 14 years. It made Pink Floyd a household name, elevating them to the level of the Rolling Stones ...

Come Into My House CD music
$30.39 One of the first classic post-Woodstock albums, MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN was recorded at precisely the moment that Cocker and his bandleader Leon Russell found themselves, however briefly, at the epicenter of the rock & roll universe. The big hits here--the juiced-up version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright," the Memphis soul revamp of the Box Tops "The Letter"--have been ubiquitous for years, and remain as potent as ever.
Some of the less familiar tracks are equally rewarding though, particularly the Cocker/Russell duet on Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" (with the composer in attendance), and the obscure early Ray Charles raver "Sticks and Stones." This one shot ensemble (including veteran British ...
