Say what you will about the Great White North's notoriously finicky weather, but Vancouver sounds like the sunniest place in the world when filtered through the immaculate comfort-pop prism of former P:ano denizens Julia Chirka, Justin Kellam, and Nick Krgovich, better known as No Kids. Like their previous incarnation, No Kids are exceedingly uncool and irrefutably talented scholars of pop history, preferring the brainy accuracy of artists such as Steely Dan, Burt Bacharach, Sufjan Stevens, and the Style Council over more traditional indie rock heroes like the Velvet Underground and the MC5 (think Yo La Tengo and Field Music-lite). The trio's one undeniable thread to the gentrified indie pop community is the omnipresent shadow of Brian Wilson, though instead of Pet Sounds, No Kids seem far more intrigued by later albums like Sunflower, Holland, and Carl & the Passions, a notion supported by the schizophrenic one-two punch of melancholic opener "Great Escape" and the bouncy Stereolab-esque "For Halloween." Less busy instrumentally than P:ano, the band still deals out polyrhythms generously and peppers its tunes with a vast arsenal of instruments that include expansive lap steel, woodwinds, and string and horn sections, especially on the Broadway-tinged "I Love the Weekend" and "Neighbors Party." All of these diversions are lovely, if not a bit contrived, and in the end it's the quieter moments like "Dancing in the Stacks" and the lush closer, "The Puddle," that resonate most on Come into My House. ~ James Christopher MongerCMJ - "[S]welling with the power of a full orchestra with baritone bassoons, waiting to burst open with 45rpm R&B beats." Q (Magazine) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "It's the simpler arrangements that take off, such as 'The Beaches All Closed,' a superbly poised slice of R&B..." Audio Mixer: Andy Sneap. Illustrator: John Lorenzi. Photographer: Ross Halfin. The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later ...

$7.96 The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Ernie Watts (saxophone); Ian Stewart (keyboards). Recorded live in New York, New York in 1981. Audio Remasterers: Stephen Marcussen; Stewart Whitmore. Photographer: Ken Regan. Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, it isn't nearly enough grit to make it rock as hard as Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! or even Love You Live, depressingly enough. ...

$87.89 (2-LP set + book) This May 17th, 1966 concert, in which Dylan played electric material in front of a British audience, was actually recorded in Manchester. Even those who've owned this recording for many a year should be tempted by this official package,
LIVE 1966... includes a 56-page booklet filled with rare photographs. Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano); Robbie Roberston (guitar); Richard Manuel (piano); Garth Hudson (organ); Rick Danko (bass, background vocals); Mickey Jones (drums). Recorded live at the Manchester Free Hall, Manchester, England on May 17, 1966. Includes liner notes by Tony Glover. The most famous bootleg in rock history, with the possible exception of Dylan's own Basement Tapes, finally makes its official appearance 32 years after the event, and nearly 30 years after it started circulating in the underground. Although often identified as a Royal Albert Hall show, this May 17, 1966, concert, in which Dylan played electric material in front of a British audience, was actually recorded in Manchester (hence the unwieldy title with quotes around "Royal Albert Hall"). Even those who've owned this recording for many a year might be tempted by this official package, as it has been expanded into a two-CD set that not only includes the eight electric rock songs from the original bootleg, but also the seven solo acoustic performances that comprised the first half of the show. It's all in very good fidelity, about as good as any copies you could find through unofficial sources. More importantly, the electric half in particular is an important document of rock history. It captures the point at which Dylan was at his most controversial and hard rocking as he blazes through mid-'60s classics such as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Ballad of a Thin Man," ...
