A deceptively full-bodied solo project, Avantasia is the brainchild of German heavy-metal composer Tobias Sammet of Edguy. Given that he's referred to as a "composer", it should come as no surprise that Sammet's latest is a fusion of classical bombast and wailing power metal. While songs such as "Another Angel Down" are recognizable as straight up headbanging fodder, the title track personifies Sammet's ambitions with eleven minutes of rustic folk violin and crashing symphonic grandeur. Sammet's SCARECROW is the night at the opera Queen only dreamed of.

WELL THIS STUFF IS GREAT!!I AM AN 80'S METAL LOVER AND THIS REALLY TOOK ME TO A TIME WHEN I WOULD LISTEN TO THIS KIND OF HEAVY METAL,THAT NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE MAKE THESE DAYS,THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE COMBINATION OF POWER,HEAVY AND EVEN POP ROCK.ERIC SINGER'S DRUMMMING IS SUPERB AND THE INCLUSSION OF ALICE COOPER AS A GUEST SINGER BLOWS ME AWAY EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT.IF YOU CAN GET IT,GET IT!!!! This is KILLER This is a killer album,it has moments of Iron Maiden on it especially the JORN sang "another angel down" and "devil in the belfry". Jorn also sounds amazing with tobia on "the scarecrow" which is a epic song. The Alice Cooper sang "the toy master" is one of the best songs Cooper has done in years. "Lost in space" has a radio friendly Bon Jovi sound to it and is pretty cool. Submitted by cutter (mo. usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
It's definitely Different... I have listened to his previous Avantasia cd's and I was hoping/expecting for the next cd to at least answer the question: Where is Anna Held? Is she alive? What happens to her? Since he makes it his quest in the first cd and then in the second also to find her, yet never does....
So here comes "Scarecrow"....a different story set in a different time with Wonderful musicians and Awesome music and lyrics. I think it's great....
But it feels as if Tobias Sammet had to get this out of his system....sort of like a creative surge taking hold of him...I like this cd. I am just still waiting for a response to the first 2 Avantasia cd's. I'd really like to know what happens to the Protagonist in the story and Anna Held. Scarecrow
$10.35 An all-star aggregation similar in conception to Ayreon, Avantasia's The Metal Opera naturally spotlights its creator, Tobias Sammet, who wrote all the music and the involved fantasy storyline over the course of a year as a side project from his main gig with the German power metal band Edguy. Though Sammet's vocals play a major role, he recruited some of his power metal contemporaries to sing the parts of different characters in the story, tailoring his casting choices -- elves, dwarves, Druids, and other D&D-type mainstays -- to their vocal ranges. (Oddly, given the themes, there's a bit of a Christian undertone to the lyrics.) It's tempting to say that for a grandiose conceptual project like this, the scope of the ambition is more important (and entertaining) than the actual results. Everything here is painted in such sweeping colors -- the epic song lengths, the heroic themes of the narrative, the bombastic arrangements, even the brief Latin-titled ...

$14.05 It's easy to belittle power metal bands because they often marry portentous musical ambitions with hackneyed Manowar-like posturing that only a 12-year-old could possibly buy into; Germany's Edguy, however, are clever enough to flip those tables by making it evident that they don't take themselves all that seriously. Eight albums into the quintet's career, Edguy have in many ways succeeded where genre daddies Helloween first bit the dust -- injecting ample doses of fun, on-stage glam-metal gymnastics, Scorpions-like face pulling, and unselfconscious humor into what is normally an outwardly austere musical style, and 2006's Rocket Ride is no exception. Possibly validated even further by the recent emergence of Britain's the Darkness, this album's relaxed vibe begins with its silly-aliens-on-crack cover art and culminates in ...

$9.85 One of singer Sandy Denny's finest post-Fairport Convention outings, 1972's SANDY finds the beloved U.K. folk singer backed by top-tier musicians, including Fairport peers Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick, as well as renowned pedal-steel guitarist "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow. "It'll Take a Long Time" opens the album in a beautifully sleepy manner, allowing Denny's emotive voice to shine, while her cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" veers down a country road, with Kleinow's plaintive guitar lines setting the mood. Although Denny remains best known for her work with Fairport Convention (and, of course, her vocals on Led Zep's "The Battle of Evermore"), this disc is on par with many of her best moments with any ensemble.
These 16 songs offer the briefest possible introduction to this remarkable singer and songwriter. THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY was compiled by Joe Boyd (who produced most of her recordings), and husband Trevor Lucas. The tracks are culled from the four solo albums that were released during her lifetime, three Fairport Convention releases, and work from the short-lived band Fotheringay, in which Lucas was a member.
The tracks run the gamut from orchestral splendor ("The Lady") to British folk-rock ("Tam Lin"). There are two songs by Richard Thompson (including a remarkable rendition of "For Shame of Doing Wrong"), but the bulk of the material was written by Denny herself. Denny possessed one of the most spiritually captivating voices of her era and wrote some bona fide classic songs. The set closes with one of her very finest and most beloved numbers, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes."
Sandy Denny recorded this, her first album in 1967, a year before joining Fairport Convention. THE ORIGINAL SANDY DENNY is more influenced by American folk music than her subsequent albums were. The instrumental lineup here is quite spare--there are just one or two acoustic guitars and Denny's remarkable voice. Both Tom Paxton, and Jackson Frank contribute a pair of ...
