Hums by Ala Ghawas: A true sound of nostalgiaBy Adarsh AlphonsWhispers of nostalgia in a tender voice with resonating words - it is this wonderful configuration of musical score, lyrics and even more importantly, believable emotional deliverance that makes Ala's songs hard to forget and even harder to not be moved by. First time I heard his debut EP - Hums, the strong nostalgic component of the music steered my emotions into wistful reminiscence, I couldn't help being taken back to thoughts of love - lost or still longing for. Just as poet Pablo Neruda dedicated 'sonnets! rise only because you gave them life' to Matilde, the love of his life, 'Hums' is about love, it is an epic of lost and lingering feelings, with each song an ode to individuals in his life. The EP picks up on his main influences, Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan, in terms of their literal lyrics and laidback melodies. On a more contemporary note, Ala hits the raw tones of Damien Rice by evoking wistful affections of the past while having a very powerful mellow-down effect, in the same way Elliott Smith is low-key. Having known Ala for almost a year I have watched him put this EP together (from writing the lyrics to the production, all of which he did by himself) and it has been so inspiring and humbling - to watch him create this EP so painstakingly with few resources. His recording studio was his 3 by 3 feet closet - just enough space for him and his guitar. Just listening to his music, this much is obvious - he has tremendous potential and I can clearly see him appealing to many a heart with his tracks. In this tiny little closet on the fourth floor of an apartment building in Boston, Ala has created an EP that is original to listen to, saturated with honest and straightforward emotions that are altogether refreshing to my ears. $9.69 Lure of the Lights: Musical Tales of Great Lakes LighthousesBiographical Information on Joe Hansen and the HansensThe creators of Lure of the Lights: Musical Tales of Great Lakes Lighthouses are the Hansens. Greg, Joe and Steve are Ohio-born brothers who have played and sung together for many years. Grandparents on their mother's side had a deep love for music, and played piano and fiddle together during the Depression and beyond, instilling in their family a dedication to excellence and a love for beautiful music.Greg's giftedness is evidenced not only by strong vocals, but by excellence on both guitar and keyboard. He also writes music and arranges compositions. Joe is the primary lyricist, also singing, playing guitar and keyboard, and composing music. Steve is a talented vocalist, and is joined in that department by Joe's wife Liz and daughter Emily. Greg's son, Greg T. , is the bassist. Steve's wife, Donna, is the graphic designer responsible for all art work for the CD, which includes a full lyric sheet. Lure of the Lights is an all-in-the-family kind of production!!All of the Hansens have 'regular jobs,' but feel privileged to be able to include music as an integral part of life. Joe and Liz's fascination with lighthouses and their histories sparked the project in early 1999. The lighthouses of the Great Lakes represent a past time for the most part, but still offer an ideal of self-sacrificing service and an emblem of beauty and history for current and future generations. Lure of the Lights .... 15 songs and nearly an hour of pure enjoyment for the lovers of Great Lakes Lighthouses! Each Great Lake and Great Lake state is represented. Old Sodus Point, New York, Lake Ontario, "Ishmael's Petition" is about the formal request made by a War of 1812 Veteran to be appointed to the new light. Dunkirk, New York, Lake Erie, "Out to Dunkirk" is a short history of the 1800s at that light, ...

Hums CD music
$11.99 Some electronica is essentially disco, some electronica is designed for world music enthusiasts, some electronica is mindful of hip-hop, and some electronica operates with an in-your-face rocker mentality; New York City-based producer/DJ Submerged clearly favors an in-your-face rocker mentality on his two-CD set Violence as First Nature, which consists of the main 79-minute CD and a 59-minute bonus mix disc. Violence as First Nature doesn't sound like the title of a chillout, downtempo, ambient, or trip-hop album -- more like the title of a metal, punk, or hardcore disc. And while Submerged isn't metal, punk, or hardcore, he can certainly be found on the harder, heavier side of electronica. No one will mistake Violence as First Nature for easy listening; this is forceful, abrasive, confrontational stuff, and the fact that the music is programmed doesn't mean that it doesn't rock. Submerged rocks, and he does so aggressively (the bonus mix disc, in fact, can be downright brutal). But at the same time, a certain moodiness often prevails on Violence as First Nature -- which essentially falls into the drum'n'bass category. Drum'n'bass (also known as jungle) is the primary ingredient, although techno, industrial rock, and noise rock are also influences. And while this late-2008 release could easily appeal to ravers, Submerged could attract rockers as well. There are some rockers who don't care for the whole raver subculture but nonetheless appreciate certain electronic sounds; they wouldn't go to a rave, but they appreciate what industrial rockers like Ministry, ...
