| | Youssou N'Dour Egypt CD (2004)
Go Marko Go! songs
$14.99 International pop star Youssou N'Dour explores of the themes and sounds of Senegal's Sufi culture on this striking 2004 release. Markedly different than the artist's other albums, on which African elements combine with Caribbean influence and various American styles (including soul, jazz, and rock), EGYPT moves away from N'Dour's trademark pop and deep into the territory of traditional religious music. Though characterized by an undercurrent of West African rhythms and inflections, the sound here--as the title indicates--draws on North African and Middle Eastern Arab music, and features such regional instruments as the oud, the arghul (a double-reed bamboo flute), tablas, and various Arab Gulf percussion.
There is a distinct classical aura here (the personnel list includes an arranger, a conductor, and a score manager). The Fathy Salama Orchestra, which backs N'Dour throughout, features--in addition to Egyptian flutes and drums--first and bass violins, and the group's complex, elegant interplay gives these recordings a stately, stirring feel. N'Dour's voice, in contrast to its usual role as a high, soaring lead, ...

| | Manny Oquendo On The Move! (Muevete!) CD (1996)
Go Marko Go! CD music
$12.49 The strong and powerful influence of African music is hard to miss on this CD, which illustrates the rich cultural heritage of blacks in Bahia and Northeastern Brazil (a region that has produced many musical greats). Legends like Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito were on the scene, so aspiring young salseros assumed they had no choice but to give 200 percent. The percussionist and his longtime partner Andy Gonzales bring that unwavering work ethic to On the Move! (Muevete!), an outstanding live date recorded at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco. When a 65-year-old Oquendo and his band Libre tear into Bobby Capo's familiar cha-cha "Piel Canela" and infectious originals like "No Cuentes," "Chaquilla Ideal," "Oquendo Y Libre" (a celebration of New York's salsa scene), and the descarga (Afro-Cuban jam) "Muevete un Poco," it's clear that a genuine master of salsa is very hard at work. Though salsa dominates this set, Oquendo triumphantly switches to Latin jazz for an engaging version of the Lester Young standard "Lester Leaps In." ~ Alex Henderson

| | Best Of The Red Peters Comedy Music Hour, Vol. 1 CD (2007)
Go Marko Go! music CDs
$13.85 When Howard Stern was given two channels to program on the Sirius satellite radio network he did so with an immature pack of degenerates including Red Peters, who hosts the weekly Red Peters Comedy Music Hour Radio Show. This compilation of listener-submitted smut suggests Red's fans are a creative bunch -- along with sleazy, twisted, unashamed, and mostly hilarious. Sometimes they're even wry, like the great John R. Butler, who nails the Louvin Brothers/old-timey country gospel sound, then adds lyrics that should come nowhere near a house of worship. Much less subtle is the hair metal-loving Joel Moss, who promises to make sweet love to the listener with his rock & roll, although he says something much more instant and offensive than "make sweet love." There's also grandmother fetishism to a hip-hop beat from the brilliantly named ...
| | Music Of Serbia CD (2008) Import
Go Marko Go! songs
$17.25 At times highly klezmer-like, this album of Serbian music from the Novi Sad's resident folk ensemble runs the gamut from ultra-high-energy flutes and violins to female martial chants that seem to be straight from the communist era. Each piece hails from a different region of Serbia, both old (now largely Montenegro and in some cases Bulgaria) and new. The vocal pieces can be a bit grating (lying somewhere between the ethereality of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and a tragic sea shanty), but the interplay of piccolo and violin at ultra-high tempos is something to marvel at. The sheer speed of performance here demands attention -- this is not something that can be played as background music on a lazy day. With notes, motives, and whole melodic lines flying at breakneck speed, though, it's the slow pieces that really grab the attention, jolting the listener to a halt. Newcoming listeners should start out with something ...
