There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential as air. (Note: The Deluxe Edition includes two bonus ...

| | Celtic Woman CD (2005)
Go Marko Go! music CDs
$11.39 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. On numerous tracks, several of the ...

| | Best Of The Red Peters Comedy Music Hour, Vol. 1 CD (2007)
Go Marko Go! music CDs
$14.29 When Howard Stern was given two channels to program on the Sirius satellite radio network he did so with an immature pack of degenerates including Red Peters, who hosts the weekly Red Peters Comedy Music Hour Radio Show. This compilation of listener-submitted smut suggests Red's fans are a creative bunch -- along with sleazy, twisted, unashamed, and mostly hilarious. Sometimes they're even wry, like the great John R. Butler, who nails the Louvin Brothers/old-timey country gospel sound, then adds lyrics that should come nowhere near a house of worship. Much less subtle is the hair metal-loving Joel Moss, who promises to make sweet love to the listener with his rock & roll, although he says something much more instant and offensive than "make sweet love." There's also grandmother fetishism to a hip-hop beat from the brilliantly named Rappy McRapperson, Rob Zombie-influenced filth from the gritty Dirty ...
| | Music Of Serbia CD (2008) Import
Go Marko Go! songs
$17.25 At times highly klezmer-like, this album of Serbian music from the Novi Sad's resident folk ensemble runs the gamut from ultra-high-energy flutes and violins to female martial chants that seem to be straight from the communist era. Each piece hails from a different region of Serbia, both old (now largely Montenegro and in some cases Bulgaria) and new. The vocal pieces can be a bit grating (lying somewhere between the ethereality of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and a tragic sea shanty), but the interplay of piccolo and violin at ultra-high tempos is something to marvel at. The sheer speed of performance here demands attention -- this is not something that can be played as background music on a lazy day. With notes, motives, and whole melodic lines flying at breakneck speed, though, it's the slow pieces that really grab the attention, jolting the listener to a halt. Newcoming listeners should start out with something gentler perhaps, like the high-tempo work of someone like Saban ...
