(2 Customer Reviews)
To many, Toto are considered first and foremost a "studio creation," as the original lineup was comprised of already accomplished session players. But unlike, say, Steely Dan, who for an extended period focused solely on studio work, Toto steadily backed up their albums with live work. That said, a Toto concert album will never be mistaken for Live at Leeds, as they don't stray far from the original studio versions (save for extended "jam" passages), as evidenced throughout 2008's Falling in Between Live. Recorded at a stop in Paris during their 2007 tour, the set list manages to include Toto classics ("Hold the Line," "Rosanna," "Africa") as well as new material ("Falling in Between," "King of the World," "Bottom of Your Soul"). And only at a Toto concert would you get not one, not two, but three chop-showcasing solos (by keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, guitarist Steve Lukather, and drummer Simon Phillips). So from that standpoint, Falling in Between Live is a fitting, true-to-form souvenir of Toto's 2007 world tour. ~ Greg Prato
Toto: Steve Lukather, Tony Spinner (vocals, guitars); Greg Phillinganes (vocals, keyboards); Bobby Kimball (vocals); Leland Sklar (bass guitar); Simon Phillips (drums).
Additional personnel: Geoff Banks (guitars); Kenny Moran (keyboards); Ian "Robbo" Robertson (drums).
Record Collector (magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Lukather's riffage colours much of it, from the punchy opening title track to the closing nine-minute fuzz of 'Drag Him To The Roof.'" Falling In Between Live CD music
$10.59 At this point in their career, Steve Lukather and Toto really have nothing to prove to anyone in the rock & roll community. They've accumulated more Top Ten hits with their ballads alone than most bands have their entire career, to say nothing of rock anthems that became cornerstones of arena rock during the '70s and '80s. And while it's been nearly a decade since original material was issued (2002's Through the Looking Glass was an album consisting of cover versions), Falling in Between sounds like a band trying to find itself during a midlife crisis. The title track, while adventurous by Toto's standards with its mixed-metered time signatures and Middle Eastern influences, sounds exactly like the prog rock heroes they aspire to emulate (confirmed by the track-by-track commentary provided in the liner notes). "Dying on My Feet" sounds like a cross between '80s-era Chicago and Foreigner, thanks in ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Falling In Between Live music CDs
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out ...
| | Dream Theater Score - 20th Anniversary World Tour CDs (2006) 3 Disc Set
Falling In Between Live songs
$21.35 Sidestepping the glam and thrash obsessions of their peers, Dream Theater updates Rush's blueprint with a modern texture. The progressive metal touchstones are all here: changing time signatures, dizzyingly complicated tablature, tonsil-snapping lead vocals, lyrical bombast, and a healthy sense of self-importance. John Petrucci and Co. deftly combine all of these elements on SCORE: 20th ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR LIVE WITH THE OCTAVARIUM ORCHESTRA, their fourth (!) live record since 2001. While SCORE might not be the best start for neophytes, the three-disc opus will sate the appetites of serious devotees.

| | Measure For Measure: The John Carter Anthology CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Falling In Between Live album
$19.05 As a songwriter, performer, and producer, John Carter's resume is so extensive that it's difficult to summarize in anything less than a box set. This 55-song, two-CD compilation, however, is the best stab yet at packaging his most notable work, though a true appreciation of Carter's accomplishments would also have to take in more hit covers of songs he wrote or co-wrote, such as the Music Explosion's "A Little Bit O'Soul," and Herman's Hermits' "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat." Whether for licensing reasons or because this anthology seems conceived to spotlight records he was directly involved with as performer and/or producer, those songs and others of that ilk aren't here. Still, the scope of this package is pretty damned impressive, starting with his pre-British Invasion early-'60s pop/rock group Carter Lewis and the Southerners, taking in his stints with the Ivy League and the Flower Pot Men (who landed big-'60s British hits with "Tossing and Turning" and "Let's Go to San Francisco" respectively, both included here), and going all the way up to the First Class' mid-'70s pseudo-Beach Boys smash "Beach Baby" (and even a little beyond). Plenty more is thrown in as well: 1966-1969 demos that are about as fully produced as proper records; late-'60s projects credited to Friends, Haystack, and Dawn Chorus; 1970s sides by Scarecrow, Stamford Bridge, Stormy Petrel, Kincade, and Starbreaker; and even four of his advertising jingles. There's even the rare (and not particularly good) 1966 instrumental single by ex-Pretty Things drummer Viv Prince, "Light of the Charge Brigade." The name of the artist (usually a front for studio projects) might have changed, but actually the sound is fairly consistent pop/rock that most often is a British equivalent of American '60s sunshine pop, with a heavy Beach Boys influence (though often tempered by a strong British pop sensibility as well). And like American sunshine pop, there are good and not-so-good things about Carter's approach. His craft (as both songwriter and producer) is impeccable, the Beach Boys-soaked harmonies polished, and the melodies upbeat and pleasant. But the sunniness of the mood can get so unrelenting that it falls into a rut, and the tunes are not on par with, for ...

$9.75 Gran Ronde may hail from the West Coast, but they bear a striking resemblance to New York City's the Bravery, right down to lead singer Christopher Pearson's double take-inducing similarity to Bravery frontman Sam Endicott. This shouldn't be interpreted as mere imitation -- Gran Ronde is indeed its own band, and each of the members has the musical aptitude to show ...
