Originally recorded as a soundcheck for the headline attraction, a reunion of Butterfield Blues Band/Electric Flag Alumni, LIVE AT THE FILLMORE captures the Byrds less than a week after the release of DR. BYRDS AND MR. HYDE. By this time, Roger McGuinn was the sole remaining founding member and his band had moved from the Dylan-inspired folk-rock of its origins to more of a country-flavored sound due in part to the seeds planted by one-time member Gram Parsons.
Parsons' replacement, Clarence White, carried on and expanded upon the band's country legacy. White gained his fingerpicking expertise as one-half of the seminal bluegrass act the Kentucky Colonels and had been an occasional Byrds sideman since 1967's YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY. The Byrds didn't quite fit in with their self-indulgent jam-band peers--the band was known for playing concise and crystalline recreations of its material while in concert. Standouts captured here include the self-penned instrumental "Nashville West"; a thumbed-nose retort to Nashville, "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man"; and authentically twangy covers of songs from artists including Merle Haggard ("Sing Me Back Home") and Buck Owens ("Buckaroo," "Close Up the Honky Tonks").

And the best place for new fans to start. This sumptuous collection, 20 songs strong, rounds up a set's worth of crucial hits, and includes a succinct bio within the sleeve notes. The album works roughly backwards chronologically, kicking off with Beenie Man's 1999 smash, "Bookshelf," then winding its way back through time to 1994's clutch of smash hits -- "World Dance," "Modelling," "Crazy Baldhead," "Slam," and its rhythm twin, "Certain Gal." "Murderer" is slightly out of sequence, and dates from the following year. That paired the DJ with the song's originator, Barrington Levy, while "Baldhead," a cover of the Bob Marley classic, had Beenie join forces with Luciano. Other crucial combos include the smoky "Healing" with Lady Saw and the ultimate bashment, "Dancehall Queen," with Chevelle Franklin. Of course, most of these numbers were bundled onto Beenie's own albums, so fans will be shelling out for just a few songs, or the chance to have all their favorites in one place. But there's little argument on the choices -- "Romie," "Oysters & Conch," the original "Girls Dem Sugar," the fabulous "Foundation," and the DJ's international chart-buster, "Who Am I," and the list goes on and on. Beenie did have hits before 1994, and obviously you won't find them here. However, Jet Star's Gold plugged that gap this same year; between the two sets, fans can have an excellent career-spanning collection. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

Featuring PAOLO FRESU trumpet, HENGHEL GUALDI clarinet, CHERYL PORTER vocal Teo's BiographyTeo was born in the Puglian province of Foggia in San Marco in Lamis on the 28th of December 1960. He now lives in Bologna where he works putting on concerts, teaching and promoting artistic events. A graduate from the faculty of Fine Art, Dance, Music and Theatre (DAMS) at the University of Bologna, with a thesis analysing the stylistics of jazz in the 1950s and 60s, he has hosted seminars on jazz improvisation at various public institutions; University of Siena, the Koblenz conservatoire, the “O Vecchi” music college in Modena, the municipality of Bologna, as well as in various private institutions. In 2007 he successfully completed his thesis on the American jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, obtaining his masters music degree specialising in jazz piano at the ‘Buzzolla’ conservatorio in Adria. Teo has been teaching jazz piano at the Convervatorio ‘Frescobaldi’ in Ferrara since 2006, and since 2007, he has been teching jazz piano at the Conservatorio ‘G.B.Martini’ in Bologna.From 1985-2000 Teo taught music alternately at 9 different secondary schools in both Foggia down in Puglia as well as in Bologna. Teo has played concerts with famous jazz musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Eddie Gomez, David Sanchez, Jeff Berlin, Luis Bonilla, Lou Fisher, Roch Peckman, Gary Keller, Matt Marvuglio, Jim Snidero, Jimmy Rivera, Fidel Morales, Efrain Martinez, Paolo Fresu, Marco Pignataro, Hiram Bullock, Greg Yasinisky, Antonello Salis, Cheryl Porter, Roy Paci, Fabrizio Bosso, Dhafer Youssef, Daniele Scannapieco, Stefano Di Battista, Henghel Gualdi, Gianluca Petrella, Mauro Ottolini, Piergiorgio Farina, Paolo Damiani, the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band, singer Ruggero Raimondi, flautists Giorgio Zagnoni and Andrea Griminelli, poets Davide Rondoni and Roberto Mussapi and actors Enzo Moscato and Piera degli Esposti.
