| | Esbjorn Svensson Somewhere Else Before CD Esbjorn Svensson Discography of CDs
Contains a hidden track after "Spam-Boo-Limbo". E.S.T: Esbjorn Svensson (piano, keyboards, percussion); Dan Berglund (bass, percussion); Magnus Ostrom (drums, percussion). Recorded between May 1998 and April 2000. Though jazz was born and bred in the United States, its influence long ago spread throughout the world, and its popularity overseas has continued to grow even as its significance on the American music scene has waned. This Swedish group, also known as the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, is among the jazz trios to land on North American shores, and their acoustic jazz sound seems certain to build a following in the States. Led by pianist Svensson, the classic trio's sound is deeply steeped in jazz tradition; witness the Bill Evans-style serenity of the title track, which features drummer Magnus Öström's textural brush work to great effect. But while nobody's gonna confuse E.S.T. with Medeski, Martin, & Wood, they do bring eclectic influences like art rock and drum'n'bass to the table, giving tracks like the raucously funky "Dodge the Dodo" and the techno-inspired "The Wraith" a welcome modern twist. The trio may be a little too jazzy for the jam band crowd and a little too arty for jazz traditionalists, but once they find a way to reconcile their disparate influence a tad more seamlessly, they could be onto something uniquely wonderful. ~ Bret LoveCMJ (8/20/01, p.11) - "...Music tailor-made for jazzbos, chill-out room heads and techno hippies..." | | Esbjorn Svensson Leucocyte CD (2008)
Somewhere Else Before
$9.75 Esbjörn Svensson Trio: Esbjörn Svensson, Dan Berglund, Magnus Öström. Personnel: Magnus Öström (vocals, drums, electronics); Esbjörn Svensson (various instruments, piano, grand piano, electronics); Dan Berglund (double bass, electronics). Audio Mixer: Ake Linton. Recording information: Studios 301, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (01/17/2007/01/18/2007). It's a damn shame that Leucocyte is the final studio album by the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. Svensson died in a tragic diving accident in June of 2008, shortly after this set was finished. More than any other recording issued by this excellent band, Leucocyte captures the art of music making at the moment of conception; it was recorded as live-in-the-studio improvisation over two days in an Australian studio. It was completely finished, ...
| | Julian Lage Sounding Point CD (2009)
Somewhere Else Before
$12.39 Deemed a child prodigy, guitarist Julian Lage was playing with the likes of Carlos Santana by the time he was eight years old, and became the subject of an Academy Award-nominated documentary JULES AT EIGHT. That's a fair bit of hype to precede a debut album, but Lage lives up to the task. SOUNDING POINT arrived in 2009 (Lage was 21 at the time of its release), and showcases his remarkable blend of jazz, classical, and folk styles. The album features a few covers, including a bluegrass version of Elliott Smith's "Alameda" and an inventive take on Miles Davis's "All Blues," ...

| | Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD (2009)
Somewhere Else Before
$12.09 Personnel: Melody Gardot (vocals, guitar, piano). Audio Mixers: Al Schmitt; Steve Genewick. Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover Undercover" have the feel of new standards in the making. Similarly, ...
| | 13 & God 13 & God CD (2005)
Somewhere Else Before
$12.95 13 & God: Doseone (vocals, synthesizer, sampler); Jel, Markus Acher, Micha Acher, Dax Pierson, Martin Gretschmann. Additional personnel: Valerie Trebeljahr, Steffi Bohm (vocals); Pedestrian, Why?. Though it looks somewhat better on paper than it sounds as a completed album, 13 & God is a compelling experiment of indie collaboration. Like so many projects of its nature, this self-titled album began with tapes and discs traded in the mail between artists. Eventually the two parties, Germany's glitchy electronic rockers the Notwist and U.S. left-field hip-hoppers Themselves, assembled together in Germany to recorded the finishing touches that would glue the fragments and puzzle pieces together. The finished piece is a decidedly dark and murky musical excursion into a realm of percolating electronics, moody jazz elements, bizarre raps, ethereal acoustic guitars, and sad pianos. As would be expected, some tracks sound untouched by one-half of the collaborators. "Men of Station" comes across like a Neon Golden B-side, and it's difficult to understand what Themselves could have added, because it contains every earmark of the Notwist but nothing more. Likewise, ...
