For Los Super Seven's second exploration of the Latin music diaspora, the focus shifts from Tex-Mex influences to the more Afro-driven rhythms of the Caribbean and South America. Joining returning members David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas (of Los Lobos), Norteno notable Ruben Ramos, and Rick Trevino is Mavericks frontman Raul Malo, who honors his Cuban roots with a rich reading of Ernesto Lecuona's ballad "Siboney" and Beny More's lilting "Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo." Fellow country music artist Trevino proves his mettle as he yodels his way through an invigorating version of Alfredo Gutierrez's "Paloma Guarumera" and an equally infectious reading of Los Trio Matamoros' "El que Siembre su Maiz".
Elsewhere, Peruvian diva Susana Baca delicately delivers the sparse lullaby "Drumi Mobila" and tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso switches gears to Portuguese to revisit his elegant "Qualquer Coisa" and Os Mutantes' equally delicate "Baby." Other noteworthy cuts include Ramos's lively comical cover of "Compay Gato," Hidalgo's swirling, psychedelic-flavored English-language musical prayer "Teresa," and "Campesino," Rosas's chugging, self-penned tribute to Mexican farm workers. The highlight is "Calle Dieciseis," a simmering tale of a man looking back at his life amid a haze of lightly plucked guitar, relentless percussion and sotto voce lamenting by Hidalgo and Ramos.
CANTO was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album.

Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.

This 23-song compilation, issued as a tie-in to producer Joe Boyd's autobiography of the same name, is sure to attract the attention of Richard Thompson fanatics, who will be drawn to the presence of the previously unissued "Church Mouse" by Dudu Pukwana & Spear; Thompson and Simon Nicol played with the African alto saxman on what was to be a major single release, but one that only made it out in South Africa, and only in partly finished form, as far as Boyd and the artist were concerned. Of course, those who love great guitar playing may also want to give a close listen to "Spanish Ladies Medley" by Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy, and Diz Disley, where the plucked instruments run thick and rich and reach into Django Reinhardt territory (and why does one get the feeling, listening to this, that if Reinhardt had lived Boyd would have gotten him in on this?). This is also the second major anthology release of 2006 to feature Vashti Bunyan, which must say something about her prominence in the pantheon of British folk artists of the 1960s, putting her alongside the Incredible String Band, Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, Shirley Collins, Nick Drake et al. -- not bad for a singer whose most visible and easily accessible piece of music 15 years ago was a fragment of an unreleased Immediate track on the soundtrack of the documentary Tonight Let's All Make Love in London.
