When Meat Loaf burst on the rock scene in 1978 with BAT OUT OF HELL, he seemed rather sui generis. Few bands of the era had let theatrics seep into their music as thoroughly as Meat Loaf did (though credit also goes to chief songwriter Jim Steinman and producer Todd Rundgren), and the singer hit commercial paydirt with BAT's mixture of theatricality, rock, and ballads. But the multi-platinum success of his debut put an incredible strain on Meat Loaf to produce a worthy follow-up, as he and Steinman battled over what direction the sophomore effort should take, resulting in numerous release postponements. Three long years later, DEAD RINGER finally emerged in 1981. Though it had a few strikes against it--Rundgren was no longer aboard, and the emergence of punk/new wave had taken the public's love for bombastic rock down a few notches--DEAD RINGER contains more than a few gems. Keepers include a fun duet with Cher, "Dead Ringer for Love," as well as "Peel Out" and "I'll Kill You if You Don't Come Back."

The mid-1980s spelled doom for most champions of '70s pomp rock, as MTV and radio fans seemed to be mesmerized by concise, synth-based pop ditties. Perhaps sensing that his sound had become passe, Meat Loaf attempted to keep pace with the current pop scene for his fifth solo album, 1986's BLIND BEFORE I STOP. He enlisted the services of Euro-dance king Frank Farian (whose name would be tossed around in the tabloids years later due to his involvement in the Milli Vanilli scandal). Farian lets Meat Loaf rock out on a few tracks, but also helps him experiment with dance sounds, something that most longtime Meat Loaf fans weren't exactly expecting.

BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. Brothers OisÃn and Conal Hernon are two young musicians from the Aran Islands who, although just sixteen and thirteen years of age respectively, display the musical ability and skills of musicians twice their age.
