When Meat Loaf burst on the rock scene in 1978 with BAT OUT OF HELL, he seemed rather sui generis. Few bands of the era had let theatrics seep into their music as thoroughly as Meat Loaf did (though credit also goes to chief songwriter Jim Steinman and producer Todd Rundgren), and the singer hit commercial paydirt with BAT's mixture of theatricality, rock, and ballads. But the multi-platinum success of his debut put an incredible strain on Meat Loaf to produce a worthy follow-up, as he and Steinman battled over what direction the sophomore effort should take, resulting in numerous release postponements. Three long years later, DEAD RINGER finally emerged in 1981. Though it had a few strikes against it--Rundgren was no longer aboard, and the emergence of punk/new wave had taken the public's love for bombastic rock down a few notches--DEAD RINGER contains more than a few gems. Keepers include a fun duet with Cher, "Dead Ringer for Love," as well as "Peel Out" and "I'll Kill You if You Don't Come Back."

5 stars Overlook tghis release at yoru own peril
After Meatloaf's debut album, many thought that he just disapeared. With disco (gag) and 'new wave' emerging, "Dead Ringer" was almost destened to become an also ran. working with a line-up of some the worlds best studio musicains and cast offs from other bands, this album was was not given any promotion from Meat's then record label, (Epic). The song, "Peel Out" starts where "Bat Out Of Hell". leaves off. 'Dead Ringer For Love' in my opinion is perhaps the best track on the album. Cher, (Yes, THAT Cher), makes an appeerance on this track, and, if she would have stuck with Meatloaf, would have had a career after she split with that short guy with the mousetache. This album is well worth your time and money.

Grand Funk Railroad What's Funk? CD  (1983)

Dead Ringer album
CD $9.69  Top 500
After making a comeback in 1981, the revamped 1980s version of Grand Funk Railroad took one last stab at the '80s rock market with What's Funk? This time, the band enlisted Gary Lyons (producer for Foreigner and the Outlaws) to create an updated version of the kind of slickly produced album that made the group into a pop hitmaker during the mid-'70s. The end result is an improvement over 1981's underproduced Grand Funk Lives, but it still suffers from some uneven moments. Lyons adds plenty of early-'80s frills to the group sound, the most notable examples being the synthesizers and drum machines that dress up tunes like "Innocent" and "I'm So True." This approach doesn't ...

Rising like a Phoenix, which was the title of one of their previous albums, perhaps Mark Farner is sending a subliminal message with opening track "Good Times" that his "Bad Time" is over? The song "Testify," track three, sums up this very good album from Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and bassist Dennis Bellinger replacing the MIA Mel Schacher. It's a hooky rock tune with Farner's religious overtones. All these tracks are strong, from "Can't Be With You Tonight" to the glorious ending of "Wait for Me." The no-nonsense production of manager Andrew Cavaliere -- shades of Terry Knight! --- and Bob Destocki, lets Farner and Brewer shine. This album is like a subdued version of the Grand Funk classic Survival. In fact, both Survival and Grand Funk Lives are underrated, not just among Grand Funk fans. Where the first Mark Farner solo album, produced by Dick Wagner, had more of a bluesy feel in 1977, and 1978's Flint by Brewer and company sounded like a stab in the dark, this collection rocks. "Queen Bee" has riffs taken from Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, specifically the ending of the song; "Black ...

After penning the songs for Meat Loaf's massively successful Bat Out of Hell album, Jim Steinman decided to step into the spotlight himself when his singer's voice was too damaged to record a follow-up. The result was 1981's Bad for Good, an epic slab of operatic rock that ...

Very Best Of Grin...
Very Best Of Grin... CD  (1999)

Dead Ringer CD music
CD $5.95  5 stars Top 500
The failure of Grin to sell large numbers of records in the early '70s is one of those mysteries of popular music. They seemed to have everything, all in the person of leader Nils Lofgren, an accomplished guitarist and songwriter with a connection to the CSNY axis who had played on Neil Young's After the Gold Rush when he was only 18-years-old. He was still under 21 when the first self-titled Grin album was released in 1971. Maybe his youth had something to do with the band's limited commercial success; he often let other band members take lead vocals on the songs he wrote, preferring a group context that sometimes hid his talents. Nevertheless, the band's albums garnered good reviews and the first three (of four) made the charts, with "White Lies" charting as a single. Those albums were stylistically diverse and somewhat uneven, but contained catchy pop/rock songs ("Like Rain," "Love or Else," "Sad Letter"), any one of which could have changed Grin's story with the right promotion. This well-chosen best-of (actually the second one, following a 1976 LP, despite a sticker on the CD proclaiming "1st-Ever GRIN 'Best-Of' Collection!"), containing a couple ...
