| | Beach House Devotion Vinyl LP Record Beach House Discography of CDs
Beach House is the musical duo of instrumentalist Alex Scally and vocalist/keyboardist Victoria Legrand. And as their namesake suggests, their music resonates with the kind of languid radiance of a spiritual retreat from the modern world. Building their signature sound from a few spare elements, lo-fi organs, harpsichords, and vintage drum machines, the pair crafts an exquisitely detailed atmosphere from minimal instrumentation. Legrand's hypnotic croon sits pleasingly against Scally's twanging pedal steel lines, suggesting a country-tinged Nico. On "Turtle Island," the dirge-like drone of a harmonium offers a hauntingly baroque accompaniment to Legrand's tale of heartbreak. But somber and downcast is not the only mood on offer: "Some Things Last (A Long Time)" is their version of a Daniel Johnston chestnut, while "D.A.R.L.I.N.G." offers their otherworldly take on `60s girl-group pop.Rolling Stone (p.59) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This is music as secret hideaway, all come-hither vocals, fuzzy organ riffs, liquid slide guitar and muffled drum beats riding swells of reverb onto soft white sands." Spin (p.97) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "On DEVOTION, slow-motion organ washes over precisely twanged guitar while Legrand slides sensuously accented phonemes through the hazy mix." Entertainment Weekly (p.59) - "The lo-fi arrangements on their second full-length -- a faint organ riff here, a distant chime there, a mournful chant floating above it all -- smartly tease the border between 'pretty' and 'eerie'..." -- Grade: B Uncut (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "If you like Galaxie 500, Mazzy Star, Low -- that's to say, starcrossed boy-girl balladry refracted through a narcotic haze and reverb -- you'll adore them." CMJ - "Beach House offers enough warmly reverberating organs, feline, female vocals and drowsy melodies to provide an ample score to any chill-out tent." Q (Magazine) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Everything is dreamily understated: Legrand quietly intones as her organ conjures up a ghostly calm..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] shape-shifting backgrounds -- classic '60s pop arrangements filtered through the fuzzy prism of a dream." Clash (magazine) (p.110) - "Beach House excel, effortlessly drawing you into their world. Legrand creates a multi-tracked choir around the clarity of her lead vocal while Scally skillfully populates the songs with supporting instruments." The Word (magazine) (p.100) - "This duo have been placed in a US lineage that's at once intimate and of fathomless, reverberant depth -- Low, Mazzy Star, Galaxie 500. Backed by Alex Scally's guitar, Paris-born singer Victoria Legrand can live up to this..." URB (Magazine) (p.108) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's as rewarding as it is tantalizing....They've managed to wholeheartedly blossom their sound while remaining right where they left off." Devotion album
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," ...
| | Emmylou Harris Stumble Into Grace CD (2003)
Devotion CD music
$12.39 STUMBLE INTO GRACE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.
Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff is a worthy weapon in STUMBLE ...
| | Josh Ritter Hello Starling CD (2003)
Devotion music CDs
$21.65 Idaho songwriter Josh Ritter has received a lot of attention for his fine, spare songwriting and his no-frills approach to performance. As a result of his excellent debut album Golden Age of Radio, he's become a critic's darling all over the U.S. and a full-tilt pop star in Ireland. He's like a lot of young people who are shining stars upon arrival, except for one thing: the proof of his staying power is on Hello Starling, his sophomore effort for Signature Sounds. Over the course of 11 new songs, Ritter reveals that not only is he not a fluke, but he seems to have arrived on the scene fully formed. He writes with the wisdom of someone twice his age, and a sense of tender, subtle humor is as important to him as is his ability to write a personality sketch or even a love song. Recorded with Curtis Mayfield's old gear in a ramshackle French farmhouse over 14 days, Hello Starling is seemingly straight-ahead folk-rock recording that accents the more unobtrusive aspects of living in the modern world. Like Rufus Wainwright, Ritter takes the approach of being in each setting he writes about. His power of observance, not only for scenery and characters but subtle emotional states, is remarkable. He may be the guy in the story or a tree on ...

$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to ...
