Almost four years after Death Angel's reunion album, THE ART OF DYING, the veteran San Francisco thrash-metal group set out to prove that that record wasn't a one-off fluke with 2008's KILLING SEASON. A vibrant set that recaptures the act's late-'80s fever pitch, the outing finds the band in top-notch form (see the dynamic "Lord of Hate"), with Mark Osegueda's powerful vocals and Rob Cavestany's virtuosic guitar playing still standing out as the ensemble's calling cards.
Killing Season is Death Angel's second collection of brand new studio material since getting back together in the mid-'00s, and many observers may reasonably presume that its timing really couldn't have been better for coinciding with a genuine, worldwide thrash revival. But, ironically, while legions of new millennium kids who were still wearing diapers in 1983 are assiduously trying to replicate that original sonic template to the letter; the original precocious teens of thrash (drummer Andy Galeon was famously just 14 when Death Angel released their first LP) have not surprisingly matured and moved on with their art over the past 20 years. So it should be no surprise that Killing Season, like the group's 2004 comeback, The Art of Dying, is a thoroughly modern heavy metal album, with selected hallmarks of old-school thrash (and a few other musical styles) seamlessly woven together under the watchful eye of highly successful mainstream producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Rush, etc.). Indeed, Raskulinecz seems to complement Death Angel as well Bob Rock initially did Metallica; editorializing the quintet's instrumental prowess (and excesses) into ear-catching but thankfully still heavy new tracks like "Dethroned," "Soulless," the unexpectedly infectious closing epic "Resurrection Machine," and most surprising of all, "Steal the Crown," which sounds like something that highway groove rockers Fu Manchu might compose. Having said that, even genre loyalists unable to stomach any deviation from traditional thrash aesthetics are catered to via whiplash-inducing afterburners like "Sonic Beatdown" and "Carnival Justice" -- not to mention superlative hybrid offerings like "Lord of Hate," "The Noose" and "Buried Alive," which culminates in some especially serious moshing. At the end of the day, the bottom line is that Killing Season lends more validity to Death Angel's re-formation than would a straightforward rehashing of glories past, and one can only hope that their original fans will accept that, even as new ones are welcomed into the fold by great albums like Killing Season. [A CD/DVD version was also released.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "11 tracks of racing drums, scrabbling riffs and howling leads....A whole pile of fun..." Killing Season Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews WWWAAAYYY better than I expected Death Angel, a band whom I have followed since "Ultra-Violence" first saw the light of day, quickly disappeared after its' most respectable 3rd installment, "Act III". In 2004, they return with the proverbial "comeback album" that put the influential & talented Death Angel back on the map. However, "The Killing Season" is absolutely their best offering to date as it is readily apparent that the band is back for real, and with a bloody vengeance. This is heavier, darker, thicker and more accomplished than I could have ever imagined. Despite the groove-laden descriptor and the fact that Death Angel are a group of virtuosos in their own right, there is a bit of a spirited "punky" feel to this that just elevates the overall rowdiness of the album. Nick R's production job provides the bulldozing heft to the bottom end & guitars and to sum it all up, EVERYTHING about this album works to extreme effect. Killing Season is one of the best metal albums in my rather substantial collection and the team of tracks that Death Angel ominously fielded this time around, drove, pounded and crushed their way to an undefeated season; a killing season for sure that massacres the competition and leaves them in a crumpled, pleading dung heap at center field. This truly is a metal album for credible headbangers. Submitted by The Trooper (Spokane, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Death Angel never ceases to amaze me! I picked this up at my local record store and I'm very impressed. "Killing Season" is not as great as "Act III" or "Ultra- Violence" but "Killing Season" still kicks some major a##. It's also one of the better releases I've seen this year. What intrigued me was it has a neat fold out poster inside. Though there is no lyric sheet, the record itself is still worth its time. Once you hear the acoustic intro on "Lord Of Hate", you won't put "Killing Season" down for quite some time. Submitted by guitar_i_play (Juneau, AK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best of 2008 Energy, pure Energy. This album will be one of the best metal albums of 2008.Death Angel is back and with a vengeance! This album totally kicks butt with acoustics and harmonies, coupled with ripping and shredding of guitars that is very dynamic and goes a bit deeper that you average metal album. All this fronted by a depth of vocal skill and backed with drumming that is hard to beat. Submitted by rps (San Jose, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.85 Leave it to Bay Area thrash metal pioneers Death Angel to name their recording rebirth, 14 years in the making, The Art of Dying. Oh, the irony! Never ones to play it straight, Death Angel, like their first wave of thrash inspiration, Exodus, shocked their aging fans when they courageously shrugged off the years of rust and returned to active metal duty in 2004. And because they were merely teenagers during their first run, most of the band are amazingly still in their early 30s! More importantly, they've done so in style. The Art of Dying, even while bypassing the often Byzantine arrangements heard on the group's first two albums, manages to maintain the songwriting focus of their third (and heretofore last) effort, Act III, while arguably providing a better all-around thrash experience than the latter. The race is a close one, but there's no denying that everything about The Art of Dying's frenetic, scratchy-riffed first track (requisite acoustic guitar intro notwithstanding) "Thrown to the Wolves," ...

$15.05 The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one that had very much fallen by the wayside upon the departure of classic-era singer Michael Kiske and founder/guitarist Kai Hansen in the mid-'90s. Singer Andi Deris has been a permanent fixture ever since, but the band has found stable lineups difficult to come by, and the quality ...

Killing Season album
$15.59 This reissue is a compilation of the two Original London Cast recordings, HAIR (1968), and FRESH HAIR (1970).
The London production of Hair followed relatively closely on the New York production, opening in the West End on September 27, 1968, only five months after the Broadway premiere. And even though the show would have seemed quintessentially American (it was, after all, "the American tribal love-rock musical"), it transplanted well, running even longer. The original London cast album also replicated the success of the original Broadway cast album, peaking in the U.K. Top Five. The recording took the same approach as its American counterpart and was similarly filled with expressive performances, notably those of Paul Nicholas as Claude and Oliver Tobias as Berger, replacing lyricist/librettists James Rado and Gerome Ragni. Some elements couldn't quite be replicated. Nicholas, who was actually British, of course, tried for an American accent rather than copy the deliberately phony Cockney accent Rado had affected in "Manchester, England," which missed the point of the song, and elsewhere the cast's British accents sometimes undercut the specifically American subject matter. ("Manchester, England" did not appear on the original album, but was on Fresh Hair, a second volume of songs recorded a year after the opening, ...
