It's a testament to Andrew Lloyd Webber's crowd-pleasing compositional skills that the original cast recording of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA went on to become the biggest-selling cast album ever. So when the time came to adapt his music for the film version of the monumentally successful theatrical work, Webber enlisted the aid of longtime collaborators Nigel Wright and Simon Lee. They produced an expanded orchestral version of the score, grander and more sumptuous than the original, and assembled a 100-member ensemble to do it justice.
However, the tragic story of the disfigured Phantom and Christine, the beautiful object of his desire, cannot be told without powerful performances of those roles. Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum quickly dispel any concerns regarding the adequacy of their portrayals. Butler's full-blooded renditions of "The Music of the Night" and the title song are tinged with a dark eroticism, while Rossum's account of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" skillfully conveys her character's vulnerability and conflicted feelings. The soundtrack also features a newly penned song by Webber, the poignant "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver, who appears in the role of Carlotta in the film.

In 1979, as China reopened its doors to the west, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While in China, Stern performed concerts and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This classic documentary records this extraordinary cultural exchange. Stern and David Golub, the pianist who accompanied him, narrate part of the film, while Tan Shuzhen, a deputy director of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, provides a different and complementary perspective on Chinese culture. In addition to the reissue of the acclaimed documentary which captured this significant event (and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary while doing it,) this video also contains the newer film MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS. This tracks Stern as he returns to China, twenty years later, and catches up with his old students, many of whom are masterful musicians in their own right.
This 115 minute DVD features not only the re-issue of Stern's great documentary visit to China, but also the new film "MUsical Encounters", made twenty years after the original, in which Stern returns to China and finds that the children he once taught have turned into master musicians in their own right. The original film is about Stern's invited visit to China, shortly after the Cultural Revolution, which attempted to wipe out all of the Western influences on Chinese cultural life. Stern visits a music conservatory, hears and coaches young musicians and talks to professors about their troubles under the Cultural Revolution. The DVD includes "Gentleman From Shanghai."

Beginning with the most global of all waltzes - Johann Strauss's Music of the Spheres, this CD is a snapshot of the many lands Andr‚'s music has taken him to, and to which he pays tribute. The Girl from Ipanema and Granada are two Latin perennials. Italiana is a medley of Respighi tunes, and La Montanara and Vieni sul mar pay further tribute to Italy. The French medley beginning with La Vie en rose brings three favourites from that land. KetŠlbey's In a Persian Market is a tribute to the orient, complete with bazaar and colourful costumes. Far from home - a reworking of the central section of Dvor k's symphony `From the New World' introduces a sense of nostalgia and longing, as does the following track, Scarborough Fair, made all the more so by the beautiful voice of Mirusia weaving in and out of Andr‚'s violin.
