Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among the best recordings of his career, ranging from the depressed ("Where Is the Love") to the atmospheric ("The Closer I Get to You") to the downright driving ("Back Together Again"). Taking various kinds of dance music from around the globe and pairing them all together in a nice little package, Rasa: Exotica is an uneven but ultimately decent dance album. The Harry Morse Project begins the entire thing on the wrong foot; their "Brazilou (Ze Edit)" is numbing and dull, leaving the rest of the album to try and make up for this bad beginning. The next few tracks have occasional interesting moments, but they have no protection from their own faults without a really great song to mix things up. The album finally gets a shot in the arm by River Ocean featuring India. Their energetic, passionate "Love and Happiness" offsets the boredom that the first five tracks bring to the mix. The next few songs keep the moment going, updating everything from Latin pop, disco, and classic jazz and transforming them into techno tracks. The Stereo MCs, De-Phazz, and Radar have three excellent tracks in a row, making the end of the album much more preferable to the beginning. Donald Byrd's FUEGO is one of the many fine hard-bop sets the trumpeter recorded for Blue Note throughout the late 1950s and '60s. Featuring all Byrd originals, from the driving pulse of the opening title track to the gospel-tinged "Amen," which closes out the album, FUEGO has much to recommend it. There are top-notch personnel (Jackie McLean lends his soulful sax work to the proceedings), strong compositions, and a relaxed, open feel throughout. And, of course, Rudy Van Gelder's pristine engineering is the icing on the cake.
