Part of Van Morrison's living-in-the-country-and-taking-life-easy series of early-1970s albums, TUPELO HONEY is full of the organic mix of soul, folk, blues, and rock that was his signature sound at the time. The freewheeling "Wild Night" bursts at the seams with the pure joy of living, carried along by R&B horns and Morrison's own soulful invocations. "Old Old Woodstock" and the title track are songs of devotion to home and hearth, indicative of the mood prevailing at the time, as the acid-rock excesses of the '60s gave way to a more down-home sound à la the Band, CSNY, et al. Nevertheless, even though he spent some time with his feet up in front of the fireplace, Morrison was always too much of a soul man at heart to remain low-key for long, as evidenced by the up-tempo closing tune, "Moonshine Whiskey."

Hindsight usually emphasizes the more strident, aggressive aspects of Black Flag's career. I CAN SEE YOU is a surprising 1989 release of four songs recorded four or five years earlier, sometime before Black Flag's somewhat acrimonious breakup in 1986. There're no annotations, but the songs and production suggest that the tracks are outtakes from the band's final studio recording, 1985's IN MY HEAD. The EP's highlight, the uncommonly good-natured shuffle "Kickin' and Stickin'," had previously appeared on the soundtrack CD--also released on SST--of Dave Markey's 1987 underground feature LOVEDOLLS SUPERSTAR. On its second full-length outing for the Astralwerks label, the New York City-based group Radio 4 offers up a tight, confident, and aesthetically varied album that easily eclipses its predecessor. While the band's post-punk influences are still apparent--most notably Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd., and the Clash--the quintet, which boasts new guitarist Dave Milone, works them more subtly into its songs, as immediately clear on the strong opening title track, which features propulsive rhythms, a deep bass pulse, and blistering guitar lines.
