| | Jesse Dee A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl CD Jesse Dee Discography of CDs
From the prairies of Alberta, Canada, Jesse Dee's unique brand of folk music is distinctly vintage yet unmistakably contemporary. Incorporating a vocal appoach much like the blues, his songs are laden with sincere story-telling, tender laments, and clever hooks. Over the years Dee has honed his skills the old fashioned way. By playing as much as is humanly possible. Though enlisting in music school for a short stint 5 years ago, Jesse found the rigors and regimentation of school were not his path. Songwriting has always been at the forefront of his endeavors, a skill that he found wasn't given enough time in school. Taking almost all of his inspiration from the events taking place in his daily life, Dee's music has an intimacy and honesty one may find comparable to some of his influences, most notably Ani Difranco, Tom Waits, and Luke Doucet. Since releasing his debut album 'A Cross Pollination of Service Station Scrawl' in March 2008, Dee has been teaming up with Edmonton vocalist Jacquie Boivert on a full-time basis. Now under the moniker 'Jesse Dee & Jacquie B', the music has taken on an exciting new quality, and a new release is due out this year. A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl songs

| | Patty Griffin Flaming Red CD (1998)
A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl album
$11.99 Patty Griffin's Living with Ghosts was an impressive debut, but its spare acoustic arrangements occasionally made it sound more like a sketchbook than a completed album. Shortly after its release, her label commissioned a new version of "Let Him Fly," which matched her vocals to a full live band. Satisfied with the results, Griffin decided to flesh out the instrumentation on her second album Flaming Red and the results are revelatory. Griffin didn't stick with traditional rock arrangments -- she also recorded country-rock, folk, catchy pop and even trip-hop songs, as well. Instead of camouflaging her songwriting, it actually reveals the richness of her ...
| | LaBelle Gonna Take A Miracle CD (1971) Remastered
A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl CD music
$6.75 Recorded in 1971. Bonus tracks recorded live at Fillmore East, New York, New York on May 30, 1971. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden.
For Nyro, a native New Yorker who grew up on the sounds of girl groups and R&B, GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE was a return to her roots. While she made her name as a visionary songwriter on a par with Joni Mitchell or Neil Young, she was also a gifted interpreter of other people's songs. This is where she proved it, covering classic pop and R&B tunes like "Nowhere To Run," "Spanish Harlem" and "You've Really Got a Hold On Me." As she paid tribute to her influences, she was aided by the soulful backing vocals of LaBelle and the production of Philly soul masterminds Gamble and Huff.
With the 1971 release Gonna Take a Miracle, pop composer and vocalist Laura Nyro completed her four-album/four-year deal for Columbia. Nyro's passion for R&B can be traced back to some of her earliest compositions, such as "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Stoned Soul Picnic" -- both of which were covered by the R&B vocal quintet the Fifth Dimension. More recently, her version of "Up on the Roof" was one ...

| | Poe Hello CD (2004)
A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl songs
$9.99 Poe has had some bad luck with love, and she's not afraid to talk about her attraction to the submissive role in off-kilter relationships. On Poe's furious "Trigger Happy Jack," she confronts her tendency to masochism and her ambivalence with brutal honesty: "I hate myself/Just enough to want him/But I hate him just enough to get off." There is also a kind of integrity in her mostly close-up, clean, careful vocals, which are laid over a background clattered with savage guitar work and samples that vary from hip-hop to noise to lounge music. Hers is a versatile voice, alternating between sweet melodies, vehement near-screams, and grainy, lo-fi spoken word.
The sound of HELLO is altogether eclectic and quirky, and its plaintiveness is offset by the fact that Poe doesn't take herself too seriously, even when she talks about her loneliness. In "Fingertips," when she sings "anyone would do, could be you," she means it, but she's also laughing at herself.
Blending technology with organic rock, Hello, the 1995 debut by the well-traveled singer/songwriter Poe is a striking record that manages to groove and feed the head with well-written observations. Working with a myriad of co-writers, producers (including Dave Jerden of Alice in Chains fame), and musicians (including ex-Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum), Hello could have been an unfocused mess. However, that is not the case; the album has a definite ...
