| | Carol Mccartney Night In Tunisia CD Carol Mccartney Discography of CDs
A casual observer of Carol McCartney's career might be forgiven for thinking of the highly-regarded singer as somewhat of a "professional guest". The country's foremost jazz players have been spicing up their recordings with guest turns by the singer for years and audiences have often enjoyed her featured performances alongside some of the premiere players in jazz. But the release of Carol's own jazz project A Night In Tunisia may change that perception. This time, she is the driving force, and some stellar players join as her guests to collaborate on a musical vision all her own. McCartney shines in arrangements designed to allow her to do what she does best: sing great songs beautifully, with support from jazz greats such as Peter Appleyard and Guido Basso.Produced by Carol and Dennis Patterson at CBC's famed Studio 211 and arranged lavishly by John Sherwood, the recording features Sherwood on piano, recent Order of Canada recipient Dave Young on bass and drumming-phenom Terry Clarke. Reg Schwager's guitar shines on I Thought About You and there is a cool spin by guitarist Geoff Young on You Don't Know What Love Is, an arrangement that transcends through a gorgeous solo by flugelhornist John MacLeod."I brought together a lot of circles in my life with this one, working with the players that I've been shoulder to shoulder with for more years than it would be prudent for a chick-singer to admit, says McCartney with a wink. So when you call these guys and every one that is on your first-call list says ˜yes", it's just really gratifying. And then when they're in the studio with you and they pour so much heart into it—well, it's exciting and humbling and heart-warming. I think you hear that heart in the tracks."Carol's impeccable vocals and finely-tuned musicianship are front-and-centre and guest soloists help take the cuts over the top. These include performances by legend Peter Appleyard on East of the Sun; the incomparable Guido Basso on flugelhorn for The Shadow of Your Smile; a bass duet with Dave Young on Dat Dere; and Chase Sanborn, Bob Brough and John MacLeod, great jazz players all, trading phrases with Carol through various tracks on the recording.Carol has been featured on stage and recordings all across the continent. Touring exensively, fronting major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada with clarinet prodigy Dave Bennett, Carol has also appeared at many major jazz venues and festivals. She sits in often with John MacLeod and his Rex Big Band at the Rex Hotel, and has been featured on many recordings, including JUNO-nominated Freeflight, the Big Band. For more information about Carol and her upcoming shows, visit carolmccartney.com. Night In Tunisia album
$12.09 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover Undercover" have the feel of new standards in the making. Similarly, she's a more expressive and self-assured singer, with a canny sense of timing and a sultry lower register that's particularly suited to a Julie London-style kittenish purr, as on "Our Love Is Easy." MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL is one of 2009's best jazz vocal releases.
Personnel: Melody Gardot (vocals, guitar, piano).
Audio Mixers: Al Schmitt; Steve Genewick.
| | Gerald Wilson Detroit CD (2009)
Night In Tunisia CD music
$14.29 Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. alto saxophonist and flutist Randall Willis or Kamasi Washington on tenor sax, spice up the band's ensemble and solo contributions. The suite begins with "Blues on Belle Isle," a bopping tribute to the riverside playground and picnic area Detroiter's depend on to relax and escape from their troubles. The vaunted school for many jazz legends over the years, a dedication to "Cass Tech" is based on the changes of Benny Golson's "Along Came Betty," and swings along quite nicely with a reharmonized melody. The title track is a ballad for the sprawling metropolis that reflects both its jewels and rundown buildings, while "Before Motown" is a regal and tough Spanish-flavored piece, and the finale "The Detroit River" goes from hard bop right into solos, with Jones as the strongman. In the middle is "Miss Gretchen" for Mack Avenue founder and festival financial supporter Gretchen Valade; it's a midtempo swinger reflecting Charles Mingus' start-stop, pedal-point slow downs and speed ups

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Night In Tunisia songs
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
