| | Carol Mccartney Night In Tunisia CD Carol Mccartney Discography of CDs
A casual observer of Carol McCartney's career might be forgiven for thinking of the highly-regarded singer as somewhat of a "professional guest". The country's foremost jazz players have been spicing up their recordings with guest turns by the singer for years and audiences have often enjoyed her featured performances alongside some of the premiere players in jazz. But the release of Carol's own jazz project A Night In Tunisia may change that perception. This time, she is the driving force, and some stellar players join as her guests to collaborate on a musical vision all her own. McCartney shines in arrangements designed to allow her to do what she does best: sing great songs beautifully, with support from jazz greats such as Peter Appleyard and Guido Basso.Produced by Carol and Dennis Patterson at CBC's famed Studio 211 and arranged lavishly by John Sherwood, the recording features Sherwood on piano, recent Order of Canada recipient Dave Young on bass and drumming-phenom Terry Clarke. Reg Schwager's guitar shines on I Thought About You and there is a cool spin by guitarist Geoff Young on You Don't Know What Love Is, an arrangement that transcends through a gorgeous solo by flugelhornist John MacLeod."I brought together a lot of circles in my life with this one, working with the players that I've been shoulder to shoulder with for more years than it would be prudent for a chick-singer to admit, says McCartney with a wink. So when you call these guys and every one that is on your first-call list says ˜yes", it's just really gratifying. And then when they're in the studio with you and they pour so much heart into it—well, it's exciting and humbling and heart-warming. I think you hear that heart in the tracks."Carol's impeccable vocals and finely-tuned musicianship are front-and-centre and guest soloists help take the cuts over the top. These include performances by legend Peter Appleyard on East of the Sun; the incomparable Guido Basso on flugelhorn for The Shadow of Your Smile; a bass duet with Dave Young on Dat Dere; and Chase Sanborn, Bob Brough and John MacLeod, great jazz players all, trading phrases with Carol through various tracks on the recording.Carol has been featured on stage and recordings all across the continent. Touring exensively, fronting major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada with clarinet prodigy Dave Bennett, Carol has also appeared at many major jazz venues and festivals. She sits in often with John MacLeod and his Rex Big Band at the Rex Hotel, and has been featured on many recordings, including JUNO-nominated Freeflight, the Big Band. For more information about Carol and her upcoming shows, visit carolmccartney.com. | | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Night In Tunisia CD music
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, shimmering beat of the classic Evans/Chambers/Cobb rhythm team is an oasis of calm throughout the childish blues "Freddie Freeloader." Often credited to Davis, "Blue In Green" is an Evans masterpiece, in which the rhythmic oasis becomes a smoky mirage for Davis' minor reveries on muted horn. The waltzing "All Blues" is one of the smoothest, most swinging grooves in the history of jazz, while "Flamenco Sketches" reflects Miles fascination with the earthy melodies and brooding metaphors of the Iberian peninsula...a harbinger of his next masterpiece, SKETCHES OF SPAIN. KIND OF BLUE remains M

| | Louis Armstrong Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters CD (2003) Remastered
Night In Tunisia songs
$9.99 Louis Armstrong & Friends' Christmas Collection is a lot of fun. Along with Satchmo, the represented artists on this 14-song collection include Dinah Washington, Mel Tormé, Peggy Lee, Lionel Hampton, Eartha Kitt, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, and Louis Jordan. While the main focus is on hipster tunes like "Cool Yule," "Merry Christmas, Baby," "May Everyday Be Christmas," "'Zat You, Santa Claus?," and "Santa Baby," the traditional and somber material ("The Christmas Song," "White Christmas," and "Silent Night") doesn't bring down the overall celebratory atmosphere. This is perfect background music for any Xmas get-together. ~ Al Campbell

| | Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery CD (1960) SACD Hybrid
Night In Tunisia CD music
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
John "Wes" Montgomery taught himself to play at the age of nineteen and created a style as influential to jazz guitar as was Charlie Christian's to an earlier generation. Recorded in the early part of his solo career, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF WES MONTGOMERY defined standards for hard bop guitar which are as cogent today as they were in 1960.
The album jumps out with the quartet hustling through Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," where Wes performs his often imitated licks with grace and agility. His extended phrases, thematic development, harmonic and melodic embellishment come together in a formidable technique with a heavy swing. An impressive use of octaves and chords coupled with the rejection of a guitar pick in favor of his own thumb allowed Wes' guitar to sing with warmth and with beauty. The lyrical rendition of "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" and his own "D-Natural Blues" are prime examples of the fullness of his lines. To this day, whenever a guitarist uses octaves he runs the risk of comparison to Wes, such was his mastery of this technique. Another aspect of his legacy is the compositions. Since their appearance on this album, "Four On Six" and "West Coast Blues" have become standard jazz repertoire. Yet to remain in awe merely of his approach is to miss the point of what he has to say. Montgomery's technique served only to express the emotions and inspirations born from the depths of his soul. From the strings of his guitar, through all the amplifiers, tapes and speakers, what shines through is Wes' heart and a style without which there wouldn't be players like Pat Martino, Kevin Eubanks and Mark Whitfield today.
Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on January 26 and 28, 1960. Originally released on Riverside (9320). Includes original release liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.
Personnel: Wes Montgomery (guitar); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Albert
