The countryâ‚„s foremost jazz players have been spicing up ... Full Descriptiontheir recordings with guest turns by the singer for years and audiences have often enjoyed her featured performances alongside some of the premiere players in jazz.But the release of Carolâ‚„s own jazz project A Night In Tunisia may change that perception. This time, she is the driving force, and some stellar players join as her guests to collaborate on a musical vision all her own. McCartney shines in arrangements designed to allow her to do what she does best: sing great songs beautifully, with support from jazz greats such as Peter Appleyard and Guido Basso.Produced by Carol and Dennis Patterson at CBCâ‚„s famed Studio 211 and arranged lavishly by John Sherwood, the recording features Sherwood on piano, recent Order of Canada recipient Dave Young on bass and drumming-phenom Terry Clarke. Reg Schwagerâ‚„s guitar shines on I Thought About You and there is a cool spin by guitarist Geoff Young on You Donâ‚„t Know What Love Is, an arrangement that transcends through a gorgeous solo by flugelhornist John MacLeod.â‚“I brought together a lot of circles in my life with this one, working with the players that Iâ‚„ve been shoulder to shoulder with for more years than it would be prudent for a chick-singer to admit,â‚ says McCartney with a wink. â‚“So when you call these guys and every one that is on your first-call list says â‚œyesâ‚„, itâ‚„s just really gratifying. And then when theyâ‚„re in the studio with you and they pour so much heart into itâ‚“well, itâ‚„s exciting and humbling and heart-warming. I think you hear that heart in the tracks.â‚Carolâ‚„s impeccable vocals and finely-tuned musicianship are front-and-centre and guest soloists help take the cuts over the top. These include performances by legend Peter Appleyard on East of the Sun; the incomparable Guido Basso on flugelhorn for The Shadow of Your Smile; a bass duet with Dave Young on Dat Dere; and Chase Sanborn, Bob Brough and John MacLeod, great jazz players all, trading phrases with Carol through various tracks on the recording.Carol has been featured on stage and recordings all across the continent. Touring exensively, fronting major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada with clarinet prodigy Dave Bennett, Carol has also appeared at many major jazz venues and festivals. Those who've long ago written off Spyro Gyra as bland and/or commercial fluffy fusion will have to reassess their judgement after DOWN THE WIRE. While they haven't jettisoned their gregarious approach, the band concentrates here on capturing the spirit and energy of their live shows in the studio. Their tunefulness is intact, too. Spyro Gyra still combine rock, funk/R&B, and Latin styles with electric jazz, but their solos this time around pack a bit more punch.

Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover Undercover" have the feel of new standards in the making. Similarly, she's a more expressive and self-assured singer, with a canny sense of timing and a sultry lower register that's particularly suited to a Julie London-style kittenish purr, as on "Our Love Is Easy." MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL is one of 2009's best jazz vocal releases.

Proving that an avant-garde musician also possesses an affinity for the essentials of his or her craft, John Zorn steps back from Downtown weirdness for a gorgeously composed set of concise piano-based pieces that fall refreshingly outside both contemporary jazz's often forced eccentricity and its increasingly banal "smooth" alternative. Selections like "Moraga" and "Larkspur" have a little bit of playful, Peanuts-worthy charm, and there are some lightly-brushed ballads to break your heart ("Half Moon Bay," "Tamalpais"), but ALHAMBRA is primarily easy-going, mid-tempo stuff, anchored in the phenomenal and assured musicianship of Ron Burger, Greg Cohen, and Ben Perowsky.
