Keyboard virtuoso Uri Caine is one of those musicians who seems to be everywhere at once, appearing as a session man on countless projects. Yet Caine also fronts and records regularly with his own ensemble, and 2008's THE OTHELLO SYNDROME, based on the Shakespeare play, provides a fine cross-section of the group's efforts. Straddling a line between jazz fusion and groove-based pop, Caine's group, which features a large cast of musicians on winds, brass, electronics, and percussion,in addition to a rotating cast of vocalists, is sleek and accomplished. Some of Caine's other recordings emphasize his adventurousness, but this outing is smooth, accessible, and fun.

While its daring and eclecticism will no doubt spark lively controversy, its heart points up the beauty of Verdi' score." Othello Syndrome album
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all bring their knowledge of great art and fine cuisine to bear each time they play together--it's a multi-faceted, heady brew. Holland's compositions are angular but never dissonant, polished but also earthy. The illusion is that these tunes flow effortlessly from this smart ensemble. The truth is that this is one of the best groups in early 21st-century jazz, based on a refined collective sensibility that is savvy and rare.
Dave Holland Quintet: Dave Holland (double-bass); Chris Potter (soprano, alto & tenor saxophone); Robin Eubanks (trombone, cowbell); Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba); Billy Kilson (drums).

| | Dave Douglas Bow River Falls CD (2004)
Othello Syndrome CD music
$14.55 A true collaborative effort, BOW RIVER FALLS features playing, composing, and arranging by trumpeter Dave Douglas, clarinetist Louis Sclavis, cellist Peggy Lee, and drummer/programmer Dylan Van Der Schyff. Recorded during Douglas's residence at the Banff Jazz Workshop in Alberta, Canada (where the other musicians were guest faculty), the session was cut in an afternoon with minimal rehearsal, so a feeling of spontaneity prevails. The music, atmospheric and free, is full of vigorous instrumental interplay and expressionist gestures.
The opener, Steve Lacy's "Blinks," has a bop-influenced head that gives way to a chorus of anthropomorphic squeals and bleeps. This pattern is seen elsewhere--melodic fragments intertwine with open, spacious structures, punctuated by free, interactive playing. Lee's cello contributes to the chamber-music ambience, especially on darker, dramatic numbers ("Retracing 2"), while Van Der Schyff's laptop contributions (on "Window" and "Dark Water," in particular) organically blend sampled sounds with his own drumming. Like many of Douglas's recordings, BOW RIVER FALLS draws from the past (the clearest reference here is late-'60s free jazz), while sounding utterly contemporary (the glitchy, sampled backdrop might classify some tracks as electronica or post-rock). Like most of Douglas's releases, this one is excellent all around.

Personnel: Dave Douglas (trumpet); Dave Douglas ; Peggy Lee , Peggy Lee (cello); Louis Sclavis (clarinet, bass clarinet); Dylan van der Schyff (drums).

| | Don Ellis Tears Of Joy CDs (1971)
Othello Syndrome music CDs
$13.59 Recorded in 1971, Tears of Joy is a Don Ellis classic. The sheer musical strength of this ensemble is pretty much unparalleled in his career. The trumpeter/leader had backed off -- a bit -- from some of his outlandish and beautifully excessive use of strange and unconventional time signatures, though there is no lack of pioneering experimentalism in tone, color, arrangement, or style. This double LP/CD features a string quartet, a brass octet (four trumpets, tuba, bass trombone, trombone, and French horn), four winds, and a rhythm section boasting two drummers, a percussionist, a bassist, and the Bulgarian jazz piano wizard Milcho Leviev. This is a sprawling album. Disc one is made up of short- to mid-length pieces, the most notable of which are the intense adrenaline surge of "5/4 Getaway" (with a killer string arrangement by Hank Levy, one of three arrangers on this set) and the blazing Eastern European klezmer meets Bulgarian wedding music meets hard bop blues of "Bulgarian Bulge." Leviev's solo on the latter comes right out of the knotty, full-on bore of the tune's melody (written by Ellis, who scored all but three selections), and cites everyone from Wynton Kelly to Scott Joplin to Mal Waldron. Elsewhere, such as on "Quiet Longing," the strings are utilized as the base and texture of color. One can hear Gil Evans' influence here, and in the restrained tenderness of this short work one can also hear Ellis' profound lyricism in his flügelhorn solo. The second disc's first moment, "How's This for Openers?," is a knotty composition that touches on bolero, Aaron Copland, and operatic overture. Levy's "Samba Bajada" is a swinging opus that uses tropes from early Deodato in his bossa years, Sergio Mendes, and Jobim, and weaves them through with an elegant, punchy sense of hard bop and the American theater. On the 17-plus minute "Strawberry Soup" (with a vocal quartet in the background), Ellis gets to show what his band is capable of in its different formations. Full o
| | Chick Corea The New Crystal Silence CDs (2008) Digipak
Othello Syndrome songs
$16.05 One of the most beautiful jazz discs of the 1970s remains CRYSTAL SILENCE, a 1972 collection of inspired, melodious duets by vibraphonist Gary Burton and pianist Chick Corea. In 2007, the two masters revisited their earlier triumph with the two-disc THE NEW CRYSTAL SILENCE. Disc one finds the duo in an orchestral setting, recorded live in Australia with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. While performing with a full orchestra might seem to defeat the purpose of a duet, it works out remarkably well. Since the `60s, both Burton and Corea have been crossover/fusion experts, and the subtle, well-thought-out arrangements accent the duo's playing, never competing with or overwhelming it. Disc two is just the two fellows swinging some Corea gems and a few standards. The pianist's bebop-flavored jabs dart happily through and around Burton's sparkling, crystalline lyricism. This is lovely stuff throughout--witty and heartfelt, creative yet accessible.

| | John Mclaughlin Floating Point CD (2008)
Othello Syndrome album
$13.69 From his wiry, Eastern-influenced solos on Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW through his world fusion forays with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti, guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin has always shown a keen interest in Indian music. Some 40 years into his career, that influence still holds sway, as 2009's FLOATING POINT attests. Though the synth guitar and polished production make the album less edgy than some of McLaughlin's work from the 1970s, there's no shortage of stunning instrumental work and bold, brain-bending ideas. Recorded in India with mostly Indian musicans, FLOATING POINT is another impressive notch in the guitar icon's lifelong pursuit of East-West fusion.
For Floating Point, which was recorded in India, McLaughlin used several of the best Indian musicians in the world. "Now while this CD features predominantly Indian musicians, we are in quite another form compared to the group Shakti," McLaughlin says. "

| | Wayne Marshall Marshall Law CD (2003)
Othello Syndrome album
$13.39 When hip-hop draws influences from reggae, it is almost always enriched. When reggae draws influences from hip hop, it is almost always impoverished. This isn't because hip hop has nothing to offer reggae -- it's just that reggae artists seem to be poor judges of what's worth stealing from hip hop. For example, reggae does not need hip hop's dumb, chest-pounding intros ("This is not a game! This is not a game!"). Nor does it have anything to learn from a rappers' tendency to go on and on about how rich they are (memo to Wayne Marshall: no one cares what kind of SUV you drive). What hip hop does have to offer is slamming beats, and to Wayne Marshall's credit, he knows how to make use of them without losing sight of the reggae verities. So "Ghetto People Song," a nice combo track featuring Assassin and Warfare, offers a smooth, dark fusion of Jamaica-flavored chatting and minimalist, hesitation-step R&B beats; the relatively rootsy "Captain" finds Marshall singing over a one-drop beat, old-school style; and on "Purple Skunk" he gets wistfully horticultural over a complex and churning dancehall beat. Perhaps most interesting of all is the faux Nyahbinghi drumming on "Beautiful Morning," which may be a first for dancehall reggae. A few more King Jammys' beats would have enlivened things a bit, but overall, this is a solid effort from a major young talent. ~ Rick Anderson
